Designing Speaker Cabinets - where to begin?

I've really developed an interest in building bass/guitar cabinets. However, my understanding of how to do it really successfully is lacking quite a bit! What are some of the ways you experts began learning and still learn to improve and build your own designs?

I've heard of books like the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook, I've played with WinISD and the Eminence Developer, but I still don't understand it completely. I've also learned quite a bit through trial and error in real world experiences. Where should I go next?
