Diagnosing a cabinet issue

Sign in to disble this ad
So I own a Schroeder 610L cabinet, which I power with a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 head. I love the sound of both, and I would recommend them to anyone who wants a larger sized rig which doesn't break your back.

Recently, I noticed a problem. The tweeter on my cabinet (a titanium bullet tweeter) seems to stop producing sound when I play finger style, as though it had a gate on it. The tweeter will spring to life when I push some sound through it, i.e. slapping, or boosting the treble on my active pickups. I was curious if anyone had an idea what might be causing this (either the head or the cabinet?) and what the fix may be?

Thanks.

Try another amp with the cab to see whether the problem is in the amp or the cab.

If it's a cabinet problem, it's probably either the crossover or the tweeter.

Does it have a tweeter level control? Possible that it's intermittent. Otherwise, the next most likely causes are a damaged tweeter where the voice coil or lead-out wire is fractured, or an intermittern connection in the crossover and wiring.

Does not sound like an amp problem. Try your amp with another known good cabinet.

Thanks guys, I did try another cab, and, as we all suspected, it is the cabinet. If the problem is in fact in the crossover, is it just an issue of a loose soldering in the wire? Or does it sound more like time to get a new crossover?

Find yourself a good service tech, they will sort it out for you. It's best to repair your cabinet rather than playing "guessing game" diagnostics. That usually ends up ciosting you more rather than saving anything.
