Did GC rip me off? (Warning Monster Cable content!)

Sign in to disble this ad
Today I went to GC to pick up a speaker cable to connect my head to my cab. I picked up a generic $10 speaker cable and went to checkout. The guy behind the counter told me that the cable was no good for connect heads to cabs and that I should get the Monster cable because it's a higher gauge/thicker.

I know that their instrument cables are BS and totally not worth the money but I didn't know if it was the same deal with the speaker cables so I splurged and got the Monster cable for $25

What do you guys think? Money well spent or was I jipped?

Craig

Anything from Monster is insanely overpriced. As long as the solder is good and you can wiggle the cable without getting weird noises, any price is better than Monster's.

Also, I hate monster cable. They sue anyone they can for "trademark infringement," including a MINI GOLF COURSE. That's enough to keep me from EVER buying a single product they make.

If it's anything from GC you automatically get ripped! Honestly though, for better or worse, I use monster cables so I can't say you did.

Monster, Live Wire, Mogami, etc are all good speaker cables. I don't think you were ripped off unless its shorter than a foot.

The fact that you bought a Monster cable isn't why you got ripped off, but rather bacause you bought it at GC. Monster cables have a lifetime warranty so they are great buys when you can find them cheap/used. Did you at least ask for a discount or did you just pay the marked price?

There are better cables than Monster. I would go with something other than Monster. Better quality cables do make a difference in the sound quality IMHO.

I believe Monsters are still guaranteed for life. I took all my broken Monster cables (speaker and instrument cables) to GC without receipts and got new ones. A couple of them I didn't even buy at GC.

You might have come to the counter with an instrument cable and not a speaker cable perhaps? Otherwise, you got upsold. But $15 more for a cable that you'll likely never have to replace now unless you lose it isn't the end of the world.

it's not the end of the world, but the salesman lied to you (big surprise there) so i wouldn't take a word he says seriously anymore.

Gauge with speaker wire does matter somewhat, but not to the degree you need an 8 gauge cable for a 2 foot run.

Interesting read. I've heard of them doing stuff like that. If I had a choice I wouldn't buy Monster, but GC is the closest music store where I live, and they only stock Planet Wave stuff and Monster stuff. I suppose I could buy cables online.

I'm 10000% sure that the original cable I picked up said "Speaker Cable"

I didn't ask for a discount.

Next time I need a cable I'll just buy one online. Todays purchase was pretty much random. I had planned on ordering a cable from Bayou cables.

GC + Monster = rip off

Both engage in fishy marketing and markups.

GC sales people are encouraged to play pricing games.. they have the flexibility of charging either full retail list price or to give a discount. Obviously, they make more commission on full retail so they hustle you for the up-sell and full sticker price. Like camel traders, and it makes you feel like a tool when you paid full price for an item and you learn later that the price is a moving target. But don't blame it one the minimum wage sales folks, blame the corporate structure. Don't buy from GC unless you're desperate and have no other option.

$25 ain't bad for a decent/quality speaker cable. I've paid more for mine.

People don't like monster (me included) for their biz practices, but it's not like $10 Rapco stuff or anything. Also is guaranteed for useful life, so can always get a new one.

So no ripoff, just dishonest.

$75 or $100 for that cable would be a ripoff.

Monster has an AMAZING warranty. Anyone who tells you otherwise is BSing you.

Is it worth the price? In my eyes, YES.

And how is a salesperson recommending you buy something ripping you off? He didn't put a gun to your head did he?

Get some nice cable and some military spec ends and make your own. Mine is 12 ga. I believe. I forget but its heavy. With big super beefy military spec ends on it. Its pretty much bullet proof. I could kill someone with it.
Total cost of the cable was About $12 I believe. For a cable that will last forever.
