Yes, they did. Recone kits are still cheap if you've got a blown one, which I vaguely remember you might

Yeah, how do I know if I need a recone or it the voicecoil is fried?
It appears to have gotten fairly hot, since the sticker had fallen off.

I just noticed that one of the speakers in my 2x15 wasn't working....so I'm just starting to look at what's out there.

I'm hoping it's just a bad connection or something.

If you bought the speaker new, call your vendor. If one driver in a cab burned out I'd suspect a driver failure due to qc issues especially given the amps you've used are unlikely to melt voicecoils at 900w. Eminence has an excellent warranty.

I bought both new, I think one from Amazon, and one from somewhere else. Been almost a year since.

The Kappa went soon after some guy fried my 800RB using that cab.

In that case, you really don't know whether the failed amp pumped too much current (or even DC) through the cabinet. Even if that wasn't the case, he may have damaged the speaker before the head failed.

It'd be hard to know whether the driver killed the amp or the other way around.

From what I gather, I don't need anything? Just to contact them and send it in.

The voice coil is part of a recone kit, they just reuse the frame, magnet/motor structure. The huge price is for the neo in the magnet, which you already have. There is some deal where the neo can lose its magnetism above some certain temp. but that's above my knowledge level. I don't know if you could get a speaker hot enough to do that without blowing it first.

Thanks!

I know nothing about any of this, so thanks for the help people!

I'll probably just send it back to Eminence this time....

hold that.

Well, Eminence, justifiably only covers factory defects.

If I send the speaker in and it's a factory defect....they fix it and send it back on their dime.

If the speaker ends up being something else, they send it back to me....metal parts only.

I'd have to recone it, as they don't offer those services.

Well, if it's dead, you should be reconing it anyway right?

I'd suggest being very clear with them that you were using an 800RB with TWO 3015's. that amp is incapable of sending enough watts to burn out the 3015, from excursion or otherwise.

There is almost surely a local reconing shop. Line one up just in case.

Stupid question: Does reconing replace the voice coil? If a speaker's voice coil is burnt from too much juice, how will replacing the cone help?

Yes, it replaces the voice coil too.

Yeah, now that the speakers are WAY more expensive.

Just depends if I want to send it to Eminence, pay the shipping to have them tell me whether or not it's under warranty.
If it is, GREAT!
If it isn't, I'd have to ship it off somewhere else to be repaired.
Slightly cheaper than a new one, but way more pain in the ass, and be stuck with a repaired speaker.

Parts Express online recone quote says $78 plus shipping both ways.

I can't find anyone local.
There used to be one, but he went out of business.

man, if you can get it reconed for 78 plus shipping both ways, I'd just do that. that's dirt cheap.

edit: oh, thought you had meant INCLUDING shipping. What I'd do is ship to Eminence and ask them if they can ship directly to parts Express's reconers for you instead of shipping it back to you, if it's your fault.

That's what I'm thinking........$100 for the repair or $200 for a new one.
