This thread was made in part because I finally found the tone I've been chasing for so long. I started thinking about the process it took me to get here and wanted to know what it was like for other bassists.
This was how my bass & rig setup evolved:
- Epiphone Thunderbird, GK Backline 210
- Peavey T40, GK Backline 210
- Peavey T40, Euphonic Audio iAmp 600, GK Backline 210 (head portion bypassed), Acoustic 115
- Gibson Grabber, Euphonic Audio iAmp 600, GK Backline 210 (head portion bypassed), Acoustic 115
- Gibson Grabber, Euphonic Audio iAmp 600, Ashdown 410
- Gibson Grabber, Euphonic Audio iAmp 600, Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab
- Gibson Grabber, Mesa mPulse 600, Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab
- Gibson Grabber, Mesa M9 Carbine, Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab |

once I found that SWR tone, I kept looking for it, and I've finally found it again. That paired with my head....I'm set.

G&L JB-2, Aguilar DB751, Bergantonio HS410
Pure Awesome. I have never sounded better.

I get close now that I have my GT-10. Now no mater where I play I can sound basically the same. But it's funny how the tone I love when I'm playing alone doesn't translate well when in a band situation. So rather than build a massive earth shaking rig (that I couldn't load in by myself) I tend to compromise a bit

A little overdrive is my ideal. I've managed to do it several ways. My favorite was with two separate rigs. Sounded phenomenal but took up way too much space to be practical. |

I suspect we all have an ideal tone in mind and, when playing through a given bass and rig, we EQ and adjust to try to get an acceptable version of that tone.
So my tone favors the high mids a bit, with a little boost on the bottom end. I generally don't cut or boost treble unless I hear something obnoxious. So whether I'm playing an F Bass through a Glockenklang rig, or a Fender through Aguilar, the tone is going to end up in the same "family of tones" that I favor. I like some variation from setup to setup just to keep it interesting, but my tone is usually going to end up within a fairly narrow range.

Eden amps
Single Humbucker basses a la Stingray, Sterling, and ATK's
12's and 15's
I hate shrill treble, so I stick to brands that are a bit more subdued. I love Mesa and Aguilar products. |

Fender Precision Deluxe (Roto SM66N, full P pup) -> Marshall MB450H+410C
Keppin' it simple, bright and trebly.
