Difference between mesa buster, mpulse, and traynor yba 200??

Sign in to disble this ad
So all three of these amps are for sale at the moment at decent prices. I was just wondering what the tonal differences between them are? The buster is the 2x10 wedge combo which i'm not over excited about, i'd prefer it to not be a wedge or have seperate cab but its the cheapest overall. I would have to find a cab to match the mpulse 360 or traynor. The thing that puts me off the traynor a little bit is i have read that it likes big cabs which i don't need for my current situation. I would want maximum of a 4x10 but a 2x10 would be fine. The mpulse is local so i could try it out. the others are too far away too test unless i was almost certain i was going to buy it. So if someone could tell me of the tonal differences that would help in the decision making. Thanks

Disclaimer - I have owned/played a Buster and an MPulse 600, (not 360) and not the Traynor. So, 2 out of 3 isn't too bad

The Buster is actually a great all tube (including the grahpic EQ section) amp that provides a seriously large 200w of tube power. The 2x10 wedge is not the best format for this amp, but put it on top of a Diesel 1x15 (or other quality 1x15) and it will kick some serious butt. If it is in good shape, it is going to be the cleanest tube amp you ever played. So: Clean, Full/Deep Lows, tight mids and high end, LOUD! The Tone and EQ section of this amp is a bit tricky (somewhat like the Fender tone stack) - all the controls interact with each other. So, if you get it, plan to spend some time working with the controls to get the tone you want. A big help is to download the Buster User Manual from the Mesa website.

Mpulse is a very tubey Hybrid, that will strangely sound more tubey than the all tube Buster. Tons of tone control between the basic controls and the para EQ, easy to dial in and plenty of power (solid at 2 ohm operation, even if the manual does not agree). Very much a "Mesa sounding" amp - solid low end, aggressive mids, and clean high end. Over all tone will depend on what cabs you use too of course.

good luck!

As I said, I have no experience with the Traynor amp you mentioned.

+1, I'll echopfscim's post, as I own a Buster 210 wedge, (with matching Deisel 15 under it), have played the MPulse 600 alot, and have never played a Traynor anything. If it were me, I'd jump on that Buster, and start looking for a Deisel 15 to go with it. Whether it works or not, it would still be a good idea to take it in for a check-up. Once done, it'll rock your world trouble free for years to come. And it's true, the Hybrid MP 600, as well as the walkabout, actually sound "tubier "than the Buster does, but still, nothing is as warm and punchy as an all tube Buster amp.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking the mpulse might actually be more what i'm after tone wise. Also most of my playing at the moment is at church using in-ears so the idea of running another cab with the buster would be way too much as we are in a concert chamber with excellent acoustics (made for acoustic instruments, not amplifiers and pa systems) What cab would you suggest for the mpulse? Because it's a 360 i think i'd like a 4ohm, There is a 4ohm 1x12 scout cab for sale. would that work well? How does it respond to slap? I know it has more of an old school vibe to it
