Different wattage cabs from the same amp

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a second Avatar B210 - I bought it used. My original Avatar B210 is a Neo (500w). I was surprised when I opened up the back of my second B210 to find its a Kappa Pro (1000w).

Should there be any issues running my 500w B210 Neo and the 1000w B210 Kappa Pro in parallel from my Ampeg B2R (350w at 4 ohms, 200w at 8 ohms).

Thanks-
Tim

The 'wattage rating' of a cab means very little in the real world. It doesn't represent how loud a cab will get or how much power a cab 'needs', but rather the maximum wattage that can safely be applied to the cab prior to thermal damage.

As long as each cab is 8ohms, you are good to go. That will give you a 4ohm total nominal impedance, and your amp will be putting out its maximum power (you switched the power ratings in your post).

The cabs are both 8 ohms. I also fixed the powering ratings in the original post.

You wouldn't need to worry so much with the B2R, but keep in mind that the Kappa Pro's Xmax is around 3.2mm, while the Deltalite II's in your other cab supposedly have A little more than the stock Eminences 4.2mm.

Xmax is more meaningful than the power ratings, which could lead to a false sense of security if you were to hook them up to, say, a Carvin B1500 thinking the "1000 watt" cab can handle 750 watts - it can't.

I looked up Xmax and it is something about the space between the voice coil and the cone. Honestly, I just stepped out of my league. Can you dumb this down for a bass player who enjoys his cabinets but doesn't really understand all the inner workings of his cabinets.

The Neo cannot take as much power as the Kappa Pro, so let the Neo be your guide as to "too much". There should really not be a problem with the B2R at all.
