Dirty E string

So, i just got a mesa boogie buster 200 watt all tube amp. The eq is frowny faced and i have my treble and mids boosted whilst the bass is mid, same as on my bass. However, when i turn up the volume it gets very distorted on the E and Slightly on the A string. I am not a fan of distortion and i want a clean tone that also will cut through in extreme metal. Any tips or solutions?

Turning up mids will make a bass more distorted. Scooping mids will make it sound cleaner. Also the more headroom you have the cleaner it will sound. Solid state is usually cleaner than tube amps.

Try starting with a flat eq and adjust from there.

Make sure your Master is at least 3/4 of the way up.

Try evening out the eq and back the master a little bit off of wide open?

Tried it with different cabs to eliminate blown speaker/bad connection etc?

Tried it with a different bass? Cables?

Are you sure the problem is in the head? If so I usually do the old cleaning all the pots, making sure everythings hooked up before it's time for the tech.

Your speakers are inadequate for the level you want to play at. You can cut back on the bass EQ as a stop gap solution, but that's all it will be.
