DIY DI modding/upgrading

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anybody modded their amp's DI? For my GK 400RB I was thinking of something along the lines of putting in a 1:1 Jensen transformer and replacing the 1/4" out with an XLR. My 400RB is in great condition, the DI sounds just ok, and I feel like i have to mod [i]something[i] on it!

If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

If it uses a 1/4" output jack it's very much broken. DIs/sends to consoles should be balanced XLR, not unbalanced 1/4".

My dyslexia made me read it that he had a XLR and was putting in a 1/4th. Carry on!

Boy, I wished I had a 400RB to play with. If you want to try your hand at modding, consider upgrading all the opamps. There is a great possibility that the TLE2072 will be compatible with the LF353 used in the 400RB. The TLE2072 has lower noise, higher slew rate and faster settling time and has a jfet input like the LF353. I modified my Thunderfunk with the TLE2072 and reduced noise volume by half and the amp sounded clearer. After that, you might want to go full audiophile and replace the electrolytic coupling caps with premium audio grade electrolytics.

excellent! thanks for the tip, hadn't thought about the op amps, and it is one helluva noisy amp. i think i'll have to go dig up the schematics. ever since it rattled off of my cab during a show and caught on the short speaker cable and just hung there, smoking.... hasn't quite sounded the same since.

I went this route with an A&H mixer. My test equipment told me that the unit performed much better after the refurb. My ears could tell no difference. Anything you gain IMO will be inaudible on a stage.

Yes, that is likely, but the 400rb is also my recording rig, which is also partly why I wanted to upgrade the DI. Also, having anything unmodded in my rig is blasphemy.

You might want to try just putting the trafo in an external box for starters. I have a DIY Jensen-equipped 600:600 isolation/balancing box in my toolkit and have found it quite useful a few times.

Been there done that, you WILL eventually get over it!

I've recently bought myself a Carvin BX1500. I've yet to remove it from its sleeve let alone take the lid off!
