DIY Question about Duratex Application

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a couple of TC Electronics RS210 cabs with that terrible gray/black finish that scuffs up really easily. I hate the stuff, but I love the cabs. I've been researching DIY solutions to apply a more durable and aesthetically pleasing coating and think I Duratex is the answer.

I have a question though: Do I have to sand down the coating that's already on there or can I just roll over the top of it with the Duratex? It seems to me that I could just roll over the top of it as it would just add thickness and strength to the coating that's already there. But I'm not a DIY kind of guy, just a frustrated one looking for a solution, so I thought asking somebody would be a good idea before I mess up these cabs too badly.

Not familiar with the coating that's already there but if it's sprayed or rolled on, ie: not an extra layer like tolex or carpet, you should be able to scuff it up and roll on the duratex. That's assuming there isn't some chemical reason why the 2 wouldn't agree with each other otherwise it could end up with "fisheye's" or a weak bond.

OP, you will find a lot of Duratex installation methods and tips on Bill's board. A lot of the builders use Duratex.

+1 for the discussions on Bill's board. Otherwise, just scuff it good and have at it. If you don't want to bother spraying, I always use the textured mini-roller they sell on the Duratex site. A couple of coats gives you a great, textured finish.
