Talking DIY Sunn 2000s 2x15

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I've mentioned it before on various threads, always something along the lines of "I'm in the process of building a 2x15, it'll be done soon!" and "I just ordered speakers for my new cab!". But Finally, without further ado, may I present: The Sunn 2000s 2x15!

Feel free to ask any questions.

Any reason why you went with that particular cab design?

Goodlawdy:
It's 30" wide, 48" tall (with casters), and 15" deep. The Speakers are JBL K140s

Deluge:
As for why I went with this design, I'm a bit of a Sunn lover. I also love 2x15s. Eventually I plan to get a 2000s, and I wanted to have a matching cab for it. I've heard great things about the 2000s cab, especially when loaded with the JBL's, and I'm way into vintage tone. Plus, it's a pretty simple design.

The cab looks nice and solid. Intuition says the speakers shoud be closer together but my math is not to the level of slot loading and having some sort of horn mouth that also acts as a port but doesn't load down past lower mid freq's.

How's it sound?

Very nice work! Are you going to give it some tolex and grill cloth? I went down the same road first owning the 300T then onto the 350B/2000s with the 2x15 D-140's.

Personally I would black out the inside of the cab where you can see in the port. Or what ever that thing is. Either black it out or stain it.

Other than that. SICK!

....what did you refer to for the dimensions.....i was thinking of something like that myself, but a tad narrower/deeper

any reason why you chose the behind the baffle mounting....i have 2 1x15's that have that diagonal baffle, made by a local company here, and i wondered if they have any solid data behind them....oh yeah ....how heavy....

Ya, get a can of cheap flat black spray paint and black in where you can see through the ports. Corner hardware can really set it off as far as looks go too.

Yeah, I do plan on putting Tolex and Grill cloth on, as well as corners, handles, and feet, I simply stained it for now since I don't have the cash at the moment for the materials. I haven't painted the back yet in part because I still need to put in foam on the rear panel, and because it will eventually not be visible when I put on grill cloth.

Regarding construction, I rear mounted the JBLs as per Sunn's original spec's. I acquired the plans directly from Mr. Conrad Sundholm, he sent me the complete plans and material list for $25.

Jeff Scott; Hey, whaddaya mean "now about the thing on top?"

Hey Spellcaster, can you make some direct comparisons between the 300pro/300T and the 2000s?

Cool project.

When I was in high school (Pleistocene era) I had a buddy who was handy take a 2000S apart and measure the port and interior - then build two single 15" cabs based on the thing cut in half. I couldn't afford JBLs but loaded them with vega 15"s and had a badass rig.

Having recently played through Edbass's K140 loaded 2000s cab, I'm certain you will be happy with it. It's still a great sounding box.

I played two 1x15 K-140 cabs for years. IMO, there's a special quality that comes with a pair of Ks.

A 2000S would look better.

i agree. unfortunately i don't have the 2000S 2x15 cab for my head. i have a 1x18 and an early 2x15 200S cab with K140's in it. the 2000s would hang over the sides, but it does look cool when i put the 2000s head on the 1x18 and put the 2x15 next to it so it's about the same height (without the 190B):

Looks cool, nice job. How much does it weigh without drivers loaded? How would compare the sound to other cabs you're used?
