Do I need the factory fan for my Traynor?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did do a search and there is not too much on the topic of fans for tube amps.
I just got my dream amp..a Traynor custom special from 1971. It has a factory fan inside, but the fan makes a horrible noise. Can I just disconnect it? Do big tube amps need fans? I used tube guitar amps for years and never had a fan. This is my first tube bass amp. It has 4 6CA7's.
Thanks

If it didn't need it, it wouldn't have it. With some research you might be able to find a replacement with the same CFM rating that has lower noise.

Check Digi-Key. You'll have to pull your fan first and get its exact measurements, though. Should be fairly straightforward.

Contact Mike Holman at Yorkville Sound via email. Send the email to Traynor service or inquiries through their website (contact us) and he will reply. Mike's very knowledgeable and will help you out.

Fan choices have improved in the past 40 years. Mine is a bit loud, but it runs smoothly. Nature of the beast, I guess.

If I get annoyed enough to replace it, I will likely just leave it in place and search out some small quiet fans and locate 2-3 of them inside the cab rather than a big one on the side.

Mike Holman is a great resource and a super nice guy, but they used to do the purchasing for those fans out of the US office - the "legacy expert" there will know the details as well.

You have to match the size, operating voltage and match or better the CFM airflow rating. The last two will be specified on the old fan itself.

Those old Traynor amps came with 2 styles of fans ... one was mounted on the side and it draws air into the amp ... a good computer fan will work, but you will need to match voltages, and the other fan style , was mounted inside the amp and forced air onto the power tubes .... those old Traynors( YBA-3 ) run the output tubes at 536 volts and they need to be cooled
