Depends on the manufacturer. Some use heat sinks.

If the manufacturer wants a unit with a small footprint it'll include a fan. Carvin BX1500 has one.

Edit: All SS amps have heatsinks, they're either convection cooled or forced air cooled by a fan.

Some do, some don't. Most of the new SS ones use variable-speed fans.

I never play so quietly that I can hear the fan...

My GK MB2-500 has one.
Many years ago I added one to my old GK 800 head.
IMHO, every bass head should have one.
Heat is a amps worst enemy...

MB200: Yes.

BX250: No.

MB15: No. And furthermore, there's zero convection cooling because the head is buried in a sealed cab.

Even a sealed cab is full of air so convection still occurs.

Paul, if the amp were at the bottom of the cab, then you might be able to make a case for that statement, though a weak one in my opinion. Inside the MB15 sealed box, stratification must and will occur.

It could be that Carvin's getting enough heat loss off the control plate to allow them to enclose the amp section fully.

I'm not home to look at mine, but I thought the STM-900 has 2.

One way to encourage the convention cooling is to stand the head on end.
Like they do for hard drivers. More surface area is directly exposed to air. Hot air rising encourages a chimney effect. A lot less need for a fan.
I have a power amp that stands this way, and hard drives with no fans.

It's tough enough to get bass players to believe what these small heads can do, now if you try to stand them vertically in a stand, everybody would be totally our of whack on the looks.

GK MB200 has one, but mine has never started spinning, because its never even gotten warm.

I used it at a loud fill-in gig a few weeks ago, it was pumping pretty hard and the fan never came on because it never got warm to the touch at all.

Has anybody ever seen their fans on the GK MB200 actually move?
