Dont have an Ampeg/SVT tone...what's close?

Sign in to disble this ad
still looking and asking questions...ahhhh! looking for a newer setup as far as amp head and cab goes...

thinking of a newer head...M9...Streamline...TC...something lighter and loud...but...i'm thinking of using a VT Bass/Deluxe for more tone options and muscular drive and to get "that" big tone...

what amp would you suggest to get me there...and with the VT for "more"...?

which way to go?
what to do?
?

If you're looking for a new amp, and you want an SVT tone, ummm...get an SVT?

If it's just too heavy for you, get one of the SVP preamps (10 lbs) and a lightweight power amp.

I've not played the products you've mentioned, but I don't hear SVT tone in the M9 when I've heard others use them. If it were me in your shoes, I'd check into a real SVT or the SVT 7 Pro. Nothing beats the real thing but the 7 Pro is as close as I've ever heard a SS amp get. I have a VT Deluxe and love it, but the 7 Pro sounds a lot closer to the mark IMHO. But still, the real thing beats all by a good margin.

Once the band kicks in, I can barely tell that my Sansamp/GK rig isn't an SVT. But we play loud, so a lot of the nuance is lost. I second an SVP, they're neat AND light!

I can't deny that. I use a Micro VR and VT Deluxe on most of my gigs these days. But you can definitely tell a difference, though to what degree it matters to you varies with the person.

i own the SVT 7 Pro. Its powerful, its light, and it has that SVT character. As JimmyM said, the 7 Pro gets pretty damn close to the real thing. If you put it up against an SVT CL I think you would be impressed. If you have a guitar center near by you shouldn't have to hard of a time finding on to try out.

Law Of Diminishing Returns comes to mind. I'm just happy I can hear some grind in the appropriate frequencies when I dig in. Good enough for this hack.

M9 is a beast if you want a huge tubey sound and tons of power. The Streamliner is full of great and easy to use tones but isn't really geared for aggressiveness.

i'm thinking of budget and perhaps a Streamliner or LMIII with a VT bass deluxe would give me some big fat monster bass tones somewhere in the realm of Geddy and Boosty...but me...of course becuase my fingers are mine and not there's unless they stole my fingers from me, which they won't because i won't let them, no matter how much they beg!

so, Streamliner or LMIII plus a VT Deluxe...yes?

but then i think of the new micro GK amps...ugh!

but yes, so far kinda leaning on Streamliner or LMIII with VT Deluxe and have some big arse bass goodness...yes?

You should be able to get big ass bass goodness out of gear more often than you can't.

Check my thread out from a while back. It's fairly related to what you're asking right now:

Possible Replacement for SVT?

Unfortunately I have no experience with SVTs but if you'd like to get some tubeish grind/ovedrive a booster pedal into Shuttle's tube preamp will give that. I'm using optical compressor for that dual role (boosting and leveling/limiting). Then tweak with EQ and signal shape filters.

thanks...still looking, it's stooped crazy trying to find a bass rig that i like! geez, the GC guy i talked to earlier said Markbass LMIII with VT Bass Deluxe would be the way to go and would be loud enough for most gigs, and even with two loud guitar players maybe a 6/10 or even 4/10 cab wuold be enough...

and then another place said the Streamline 900 with VT bass Deluxe and perhaps a 6/10 cab would be a great way to go...

not sure at this point...want an awesome powerful rig for sure and a lighter head seems like a good idea for me...i know tone and playing is in the fingers, but damn, i want a bad ass amp head and cab and a pedal to knock it into tone townz!

Honestly, I think the magic is in the cab the SVT is matched up with. I've tried my SVT with a handful of different cabs and I don't get all giggly over it unless it's through my 810. Not to say the SVT isn't rad, but my Bassman into my 810 sounded awesome & my old Earth solid state sounds good through it too.

Anyway, I'd say find the cab that sounds awesomest to you and go from there. They're usually a lot cheaper than heads.

To get close to copping my '73 SVT and 810, I've been using, with much delight, a LMII, a VT pedal, and 2 Hartke HX410's. It's not dead on, but it's close enough.

... and of course, there's always the incredible vintage Ampeg V-4B, if you want to save back and bucks...

I'm getting killer tone out of my Little Mark II. Sounds like BASS to me, never mind whether it sounds like something else, or someone else. I don't care.

Best answer of the thread. Buy what YOU like, and never mind the opinions of others.

35 years in, I'm happier with my tone than ever - a no-SVT big tubey kinda clean kinda dirty sound that for me is achieved with this:

Plus this:
