I started playing about 20yrs ago then stopped for a number of years. Two years ago I started playing again, but in the meantime all the gear had changed. The lightweights had appeared. There are a lot of lightweight threads and interest in the new fandangled lightweight gear. So much so that I ended up going down that road myself. I bought a Markbass CMD102P 18KG and 300W and what I believed to be a great sound, loud, clean, plenty of bottom...

That was untill I got my new rig - Trace Elliot V6 head and Eden D410XLT.
The new rig (Trace/Eden) is secondhand and cost about 1200Euros and weighs 60+ kilos.
The old rig (Markbass) was new and cost around 1200Euros and weighed 18 kilos.

The sound of the big and heavy stuff - Deeper, fatter, bassier, ballsier, crunchier, smoother, sweeter and the rest.
Trade in the kilos and you trade in sound quality. Some brands with boutique price tags can limit the damage but at the end of the day BIG(and heavy) = Beautiful.

Be a man and start lifting the weights!

Phil

I disagree. Deep Fat Meaty Sound can be gotten without needing a fork-lift.

Feel free to keep convincing yourself otherwise.

Why do I sense another " Tube vs. Solid State " type of thread about to explode ?

This just means that you like one piece of gear more than another. You can't draw any meaningful conclusion about performance versus weight from a comparison of just two pieces of gear.

Get back to us 30 years from now. BTW, I have a D210XST for sale, but you have to come and get it. While you're here, I'll let you check out my light weight rigs.

That's great that you found what works for you. A Shuttle 9.0 and Neox212 works for me.

Isn't an STV some kind of disease?

+1 the lightweight stuff just doesn't have the same sound. Its too clean IMO. They do sound great though just not for me. Tubes just have a certain mojo that I haven't seen any lightweight pull off.

You are comparing a 210 combo with a 410. Obviously the 410 will be louder and fuller.

To each his own I guess.

I play a P strung w/ flats into a VTB Deluxe into a Mark Bass II DIY rig with two neo 10's and one neo 15. The thing crushes and sounds close enough to an Ampeg that if you closed your eyes you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I actually had a sound man in a top Denver club thank me for giving him an old school tone w/o blowing the glasses off the bar. So, lightweight and modern technology are working just fine for me. Of course, your experiences may vary...

Yeah I also believe it is in the OP's mind. The new lightweight VS Old heavy tube thing is too objective.

What I do believe is.......
The OP has discovered the killer combination of Trace Elliot and Eden.

I too think that a good "normal weight " rig will sound a lot better than a good light weight one and as long as light ones haven't caught up(to my ear), I will always use a "normal weight one" in the studio.
Live I don't mind so much.
