Has anyone heard of this? $1300 seems a little steep to me.

Those are VERY expensive heads and sought after by guitar players. The fact that it states a solid state rectifier, to me, means it's a guitar head and not bass

Very high end amps. Not a ridiculous price.

I'm pretty sure Dr Z hasn't made a bass amp. Every model that I have played from them has been absolutely amazing! I'm really lusting after a Dr. Z Remedy and Z Best 212 cab for my guitar rig! Alas, I have no money though!

Thanks for the info guys!! I was just really surprised at the price in relation to "features" and specs.

Um, the only bass amp i can think of with tube rectification is the Ampeg B15, and a few small other ones.

Diodes are a big tube bass amps friends, unless you want to have a ton of GZ34 tubes.

Then I stand corrected. The only time I have ever heard anything about " rectifiers " was in context to guitar amps.

Most hand wired boutique amps are high on craftsmanship, simplicity and extremely sweet tone and low on newer fangled features and high tech. You're paying for attention to detail, exclusivity, 1 on 1 communication with the builder, build quality and...sweet, sweet tone.

When I was playing guitar, my plans were to buy a Dr. Z. They are killer amps, and he has a selection that should suit anyone.

If you want to get an idea of just how sweet they are, check out all of the YouTube videos or just listen to Brad Paisley!

Having built several Dr. Z clones (RT66, Z28, gia, Pescription ES) I can tell you that the Tone stack used in the 88,66,28 lends it self to bass quite nicely.

The way it functions is as follows:

With the bass and treble at half the tone is flat you can reduce bass and treble by lowering the value on the dial. As you proceed above half you are adding gain in those frequencies.

I played a Dr. Z with a p-bass in a store, I can't remember the exact model but it was a 50 watt head I think. Sounded pretty good at moderate volumes, had a bit of an SVT vibe, but got a little then when turned up. Would probably sound good for quieter bands.

I dunno how well they'd sound for bass, but I did play in a trio where the guitarist played a Dr. Z. KILLER tone.

I absolutely agree 100%. The last bits... "build quality and...sweet, sweet tone"... were what made this whole ad questionable only because I've never heard of Dr Z. Usually when I read things like "rare" or "exclusive" my cynicalometer pegs in the red and I envision a noob with a Heathkit type project or someone who stumbles upon a homebuilt project and immediately markets it as something rare and desirable.
