Dual amp question.

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone run dual amps into one cab?

For instance, a 2x15 cab.....you run an amp into each speaker?

My thought is that I could run both amps clean.......make one my effects amp........like a clean blend system.....but not have to lug two cabs around?

I would be running a 300w amp into each 450w speaker.

Is this not a practical idea?

Do I have to worry about peak wattage and RMS wattage?
(I think they're 300w RMS and 580 peak?)

You would need to make sure the speakers aren't linked or you'll end up linking the outputs on the amps, which could result in ruining one or both of them. Also if the signals are going to be slightly different (i.e. effects on one signal) it would be optimal if the 215 is a dual enclosure, rather than a single joined enclosure for both speakers. This wouldn't be as big of an issue, especially considering that the source originates in the same place, but if the speakers are acoustically coupled within a single chamber then too much variation in the signal could cause damage to the speakers. If the speakers aren't electronically linked or enclosed in a single chamber then it's essentially the same has having two amps each with a 115 cabinet.

It's an old ported SWR cab with Emi Kappalites. I would have to rewire the cab to make it work. Each speaker gets it's own jack. Fairly sure it's just one big open cab with a port at the bottom.
Each speaker is rated at 450w power rating and 900w music program (whatever that means??)

I would mostly be doing one fat and clean, and the other more midrange focused and for fuzz pedals.

So you're saying that I'll probably damage my speakers this way?

Doubtful you'll damage the speakers unless you just overdrive them. It'll probably sound like a$$ though!

So two different sounds into one cab just sounds bad?

It seems to me that if the drivers aren't isolated then there will be unwanted artifacts. As the drivers are moving in different ways they will be creating pressure on the others that could cause non linear behavior, making them sound like doooooooooooo! It is not a good idea IMO.

Problem solved. I purchased a pair of 2x10 cabs.

I can either run a pair of amps to a pair of 2x10s or pair of amps to a 2x10 and a 2x15.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone ever use two amps at the same time??

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, can I use a Boss Line Selector to split my signal?

My set up will work like this.....

One Trace Elliot V-type 300h on the 2x15, and the other Trace Elliot V-type 300h on the 2x10.

Run my bass to my pedalboard.....tuner->compressor->Line Selector (split the signal) A/B.....

A - can go directly to the 2x15 rig.
B - will go through my OD/Fuzz pedals to the 2x10 rig.

So I can dial A in to be darker and more bass focused, B can be more mid focused and punchy (pedal friendly). Both amps will run at all times.....B will see the drive effects when kicked in.

Seems like the perfect solution for me.

Any thoughts on this?

Is it worth the effort?

Just a quick rig up tonight of this idea.

Sounds AWESOME. wow.
so much clean power, and fat low end.....yet thick sludgy grinding overdrive.

I need to do some tweaking yet....but I think this is exactly what I was looking for.
