Duck Dunn using Marshalls!

Sign in to disble this ad
My friend showed me these videos from the 60's, featuring Duck Dunn rocking a Marshall with Booker T and the MG's as well as Sam and Dave. Check it out:

Sam and Dave Hold On I'm Coming:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_juH0AHvwk

Booker T and the MG's Green Onions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-7QS...eature=related

So there you have it, Duck Dunn getting his classic old school bass tone on Marshall amps. Most people don't think of bass amps when they think of Marshall, but some of those old Marshalls make stellar bass amps! I use a 2061x myself and those old Marshalls are full of thick tubey old-school goodness.

I remember hearing DD say that he liked Marshall Amps while on tour in Europe, but they kept blowing up on him.

Love it!

Heh, a Marshall 4x15....

Always felt something about the Midrange of a Marshall that is just grand.

Probably was using those because they didnt want to ship their amps over to England so that was the backline they provided. Still sounds like the Duck!

Nor did they want to have to convert them to 220v. I'm sure they would have used Fender Showman and Twins if available to them, but I doubt that many were available for hire in England circa 1966.

Thanks Mark for posting those links. I've not seen Sam and Dave perform before. BTW the UK runs on 240V not 220.

<sigh> Those tunes brought back a lot of memories.

Well, yeah, we Americans have said "220" for so long, it's common usage. In the US, we technically have 120/240v, but we still call it 110, 115, or 120. And almost everyone just says "220" when they mean 240v.

But those are Imperial volts, so they need more of them to equal US volts.

Great clips, thanks!

I've long been intrigued by old Marshall heads. Unfortunately, they've been selling at obscene prices when I've seen them on eBay and they don't seem to show up on TB.

Not alot of people use them for bass. If you wanted to use one f or bass, Either get a more recent 1992 Superbass, or build your own. That said, I tried a Marshall JVM with a bass once and it sounded rather well.

Melt your face off Marshalls
The only problem is that it is ONLY 100 watt! 4 12's + 4 15's

You can barely hear the bass on that first clip. He is there, but not really pinning down the bass frequencies. The joys of TV guys mixing live sound I guess.

I always thought bassists used Marshalls back in the day as a necessity, not because they were any good. I have a video of Hendrix in Copenhagen in 1969 and Noel Redding gets a bass solo during a cover of Sunshine of Your Love, and his bass is going into the same sort of Marshalls (give or take a few component values) as Hendrix. His tone is pure mush, completely incoherent and sounds like speakers on their way to blowing out. Gah horrid tone.

I'm surprised Dunn had anything nice to say about them.

Non-existent PA aside the main reason why they had to use such monstrosities was to get sufficient sensitivity to reach high output without a lot of power. And it worked. By the same token high powered amps and drivers able to handle them, along with real PA systems, are the reasons why such rigs are no longer relevant.

ALL the video from that Stax/Volt show is simply amazing.

The best part as a musician I think is knowing that as Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Booker T. and the whole Marquees group take the stage at different times, Dunn and Cropper just stand there and keep playing in each group switchout.

That duo is definitely the Memphis sound.
