Dumb idea or dumbest idea: 3M VHB structural tape for cabinet joints?

:D Here's another crackpot idea most likely, but just curious. Sure, it's no PL Premium, but could it *maybe* work or has someone here tried it?

What I'm thinking is one could provide a flat pack with the tape pre installed on one side. The end user could then just stick it all together. Mess free! Perfect for the apartment builder. It requires ply to be sealed, but again, that's on the provider, not end user. Hmm, cleat-like pieces for increased bonding surface area or of a non-porous material for better bonding could make it more feasible. Can't imagine it being stronger than the base material, as a proper glue joint would be, but *strong enough*? Making it all air tight in the corners might be tricky. Provides some damping that may or may not be useful. Fairly pricey...

Other ideas for mess-free flat pack construction?

There's only one way to find out.

I think the part about making the cab airtight would be one of the big issues.

Adhesives fail over time, no matter how strong they start out. :)

Yup. Depends on how compressible it is and how will it can keep the panels squeezed together with potential double thicknesses at the corners.

Like PL Premium? :smug: VHB has a 30-year track record and has seen use holding trailer panels and building facades on. Those see something like 30psf gusts on very large panels over many years. I figured it out that in a cabinet, it's closer to a few psf (+ smaller panels) from SPL. Then it's just impact resistance for the rest of it's life, which I think might be OK.
