What type of cable should I use to connect the output of a preamp to the input of the poweramp?

Instrument (shielded)?

Some preamps also have a line-level balanced output, in which case you'd use a TRS cable ("stereo", a 1/4" plug with two stripes). This can get you a bit more output level, in some cases. Requires a bit of homework to find out if this is the case with your specific preamp and amp. Don't worry about it though, an instrument cable will work perfectly well in nearly all cases.

+1

OR perhaps an XLR would be a better match. Depends on your particular units.
