What is the point of a di box? If I were to get one would it help make my amp louder? How would I hook it up?

A DI box is to send a bass signal to the PA mixing board (or studio mixing board). The DI box converts a 1/4" cable jack impedance to an XLR (Mic) impedance that the mixing board wants to see.

I'm sure someone will have more tech advice ... but it's to correct the input level of an instrument and your amp or to maintain the signal on a long cable run.
Often used on weak outputs like acoustic guitars.
If you have a good electric bass then you shouldn't need one, unless you are sending a signal to the Pa

Not a dumb question. A lot of people don't know what it does. It is used to send your basses signal to a mixer. In a live situation, you would do this, so that the sound engineer would not have to mic your cab.

To explain what it does, might confuse you a little, but I will try anyway. It turns your basses unbalanced signal, into a balanced one that can be sent over an xlr (mic) cable. This allows it to be sent much further than an unbalanced signal without getting interference.
