| Not a dumb question. A lot of people don't know what it does. It is used to send your basses signal to a mixer. In a live situation, you would do this, so that the sound engineer would not have to mic your cab.
To explain what it does, might confuse you a little, but I will try anyway. It turns your basses unbalanced signal, into a balanced one that can be sent over an xlr (mic) cable. This allows it to be sent much further than an unbalanced signal without getting interference.
