Question Duo with a drummer. How much power?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, me and my current projects drummer decided to start playing some lighter music(my main project is metal). I currently play through the mixer with a DI, but I have started thinking about getting a combo amp.
So how much power do I NEED to stay in the game with the drummer?
I was thinking about at least 100-150watts.

I'd go with one of those new Carvin micro-combo amps they're coming out with. Might be exactly what you're looking for.

Ok, thanks. I've got a store that retails Carvin 150 meters away from my home =D

Power has little to do with the issue. You're asking about loudness. It's like assuming that you can predict a car's top speed by knowing how many horsepower the engine can produce. Just because your car has lots of horsepower doesn't mean it can be driven at a high speed: suspension, tires, even aerodynamics play a factor there.

The speaker cabinet has a huge influence on loudness, as does your tone choice and even the room.

We have no idea how loud your drummer is, and you really don't till you test out a few rigs with him.

Wait. You're in a metal band and you play through the PA? Weird.

Check the similar combos from GK as well... that seems to be the gold standard for volume per dollar.

Depends entirely on the drummer!

Me on drums? Any practice amp would do.

The guy I work with all the time? 600 watts with an efficient cab.

Your question doesn't compute.

I play drums in a rock band. The bass and guitar both go DI through the mixer - as do all the drums.

Nothing that you said supports a need for a combo amp. Not saying you don't. Just saying that your explanation doesn't give enough info to support that conclusion.

What you will need depends upon the volume of the drummer, if or not the drummer is miked, how loud you want it to be, the size of the rooms you will be playing, etc.
