You can paint it, but it'll take paint like a sponge, and the static elecricity buildup plus the small diameter of the "hair" will leave a good portion of the hair paintless no matter how You soak it.
IIRC it took me about 15 layers with a rattle-can to paint white arrows onto dark gray rat fur subs of mine.
While wet, the thing looked OK, but as soon as the paint sunk in and dried, it practically vanished.
And all for nothing no less, our back-then guitarist still didn't get what lead goes where
