Early 70s Kustom 2x15 cab speakers

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so i have a Kustom cab from the early 70's (pretty sure). I really dig the vintage vibe and look of it, and it was made in my home state, but the speakers are trashed. Im not too experienced on the subject so i was trying to find out what speakers would be suitable for replacements. I play in a Reggae/Dub band and would love to use this cab for some deep rumble, any advice?

Eminence Beta's are going to be your best bet.

You might also want to line the inside of the cabinet.

Those are ported right? What are the interior dimensions? For the best result you should really find some speakers with specs that match the internals of the cab and the port tuning, etc.

It's the same company in name only. And even it if wasn't there are no T/S specs available for early 70s drivers.

Those cabs should be lined and painted black as well. Also ported. Kustom also used this horrible "sealer" when attaching the back and it gets real messy. Be prepared. Unless the original speakers are bad, they can handle a good bit of power and sound good. I ran a 300 watt Sunn head through mine and it thumped pretty good.

Well i will bow out i am sure you are much more up on this than me.I only spoke of what i was told at the HQ i took a combo over there to be fixed since it is so close to me.And while i was there asked about a tuck and roll cab i had seen on cl that had no speakers in it and what should i put in it if i got it.They said if i gave them a model number they could give me suggestions on what would work best.I understand its not the same company they just bought the name.So i dont know if they have the old specs or just someone with the know how to figure it out!

They couldn't have specs as they weren't even used with drivers of that vintage. And if they have any tuck and rolls it's cause they found them in pawnshops. As I recall the original Kustom of Chanute, Kansas underwent at least one change of ownership and move before going out of business for good. AFAIK all current models are Far East sourced from a third party.

They did not have the tuck and roll it was on craigs list. And like i said you know way more than me that all happen before i was even born.Heck i thought they were from Cincinnati from the start so it shows how much i know! And yes they are all far east made but they do design and repair here in Kentucky for what that is worth.Like i said maybe there is some one there with the know how!Maybe they just close there eyes and pick one i dont know. But it might be worth a call!Any way hopfully some one will stroll by and have a answer for this guy!

Bud Ross (The founder) lost his rights to his company in a poker game or some card game based gambling of some sort. Or at least, thats how the story goes. They then stayed around for awhile, and produced less tuck and roll, more generic solid state covered in black tolex stuff. Ross electronics (made KUSTOM) lasted at least until 1980, and from there on if they changed owners, i don't know. They produced amps during the 1980's, but had no big endorsers or really memorable models. Eventually in the mid to late 1980's, they made a line of small (under 100w) tube and hybrid amplifiers. These were also made in various colors of Tuck and Roll, with black being the most common, followed by Red. I would assume like most any formerly big amp company that fell off the map that they eventually closed production, sold off all stock, were moth balled for a few years, and then bought up and production began again.

So, yes.... I doubt anybody in KY has a clue what the specs of the old Bud Ross era amps and speakers used. The current "Kustom" doesn't have any of the original specs, and IMHO, the "New" Kustom has about as much relation to the old "KUSTOM" as Guitar Centers line of "Acoustic" Amps have with the old Acoustic Control Corporation. The name is about it.

The OP's cab in question originally had 15 inch CTS speakers. You would, like i said, most likely be fine with a pair of Eminence Beta's. I have a Woodson 2x15, which was more or less all things KUSTOM made from KUSTOM parts in Bolivar Missiouri. I lined the cab, and put two beta A's in it, and it works well for what it is - old school tech with old school results.
