Early Ampeg B15
Hey all. I just scored a 1961 Ampeg B15 in original shape. Has the original tubes even and it sounds perfect with absence of hum. This one has the navy flair type tolex in good shape.
Are these pretty rare? Any cool facts about these? What is the value of a good shape original?
Thanks in advance!

No pics, no amp. You know the rules!
Seriously, though, I'm sure Jimmy will be along presently to answer your questions. Navy flair, mmmm....

Pics are seriously demanded!

Got it. Will go down and take a couple. How do I post to this forum pics?

Best thing to do is sign up for Photobucket and when you upload, it'll give you different links. Copy the Forum link and paste it into your message.
Hard to say without seeing it but I've seen them in VG+ shape for well over $2000 before. Navy random flair is quite desirable since they'll never make it again (too expensive).

When I bought one in nice condition in around 1970 I paid $300. That was 1/6 of the cost of a new VW which was around $1800 plus or minus. One sixth of a new VW now in the East I will guess is maybe something like $22k, so 1/6 x 22k = approx $4700.
To judge common selling price you will have to research thebay,GC, CL and some vintage amp sites to get a flavor for what you have and what others are willing to pay and sellers to accept.
Notice I did not say "value". It is said that this amp is the "Holy Grail" of bass amps. I am not sure I would go that far, but you would have to figure out what having this particular amp means to you , what your plans for it are.
There are a lot of them out there, some in much nicer condition than others. I suspect that most of them are not for sale. They are a piece of bass history. A photo would be nice!
Sorry to be so pensive, I will stop now.

This ones interesting. Has been sitting in this farm house outside of detroit for the last 15 years or so. Picked it up on Wednesday. Likely used somewhere in downtown detroit during the motown era.

definately needs a good cleaning. the only issue is the fuse jack fell into the head. Other than that the inside looks exceptional. Sounds clean and tight with no rattles. I love how that little ampeg sign lights up. I played my usa lakland BG through this and have never heard a better tone.

Very nice. Bringing back some memories!

Wow, great amp! Original speaker? How does it sound?
|mindwell ||08-22-2013 08:20 PM |
Now that is tight. Tolex and general cosmetics are fan-tas-tic.
|michricker ||08-22-2013 08:21 PM |
Yes. Everything original. Speaker has a square magnet with some type of ampeg logo. It's surprising loud. With my lakland p with flats its the identical to that old buttery smooth Motown sound for sure. Sweet and clear in the upper registers.

Tolex is dusty but only has a couple small marks. Should clean up nicely. Like I said been sitting in an old farmhouse since early 90's not used.
|JimmyM ||08-22-2013 08:53 PM |
Ya, pretty nice, bro. It'll clean up, don't worry.

I want your amp ... sell it to me. ;)
|StuartV ||08-23-2013 07:23 AM |
Now please DO NOT tell us what you paid for it. No matter what number you were to say, I would want to kick myself in the head. $750? Argghh!! *kick* *kick* $3000? Arrrgghhh!! *kick* *kick*

What are the two black boxes on the amp on either side? Are those power transformers or something?
Excuse my ignorance. Ive been a long time lurker on the B15, Ampeg stuff in general actually, and never asked a lot of questions on it. I would love to have one of these one day. I have an Ampeg B50R at home for practice and I think that amp sounds like melted butter when I play my P through it, shoot, actually any of my basses through it, so I can only imagine what the B15 would sound like because I know that the B50R and B15 are worlds apart for the most part. I mean, you still get the Ampeg sound out of the B50R but the B15 seems like it may be THE ultimate Ampeg sound and a B50R it is NOT.
