Eden 212 cab with B1500 - any danger?

I searched, I failed, so I come to thee hat in hand...

I have a GK MB212 that's my main rig. LOVE IT TO DEATH. But we always hurt the ones we love and somehow I managed to blow a speaker in it. Wasn't really a volume thing, seems to have been a bad driver and now she's fixed. But being without it for 2 weeks was a real drag cuz I gig a lot and don't really have a comparable backup. The MB112 combo is killer but not up to a full blues band volume level, and my 810 rig is just a teeny bit overkill

The head for my 810 setup is a Carvin B1500. I figured my best bet was to get a cab that could work with that head as my backup. I played a bunch of cabs and combos this week and still didn't find the one. Played some 410's that sounded good, but at 90+ pounds I'm not going to cart that around. I swore off 210 boxes a while ago because they don't throw deep enough into the room (please don't try to convert me, been there, done that)

If I had the coin I would just buy another MB212 because nothing sounds better than that to me, but I don't. I have exactly $400 to work with, no more.

So today I found a local guy selling a mint Eden D212XLT and I think I can get it for my price. I'm going to check it out tmw night.

That cab is rated for 400 watts, and apparently it's switchable between 4 and 8 ohms. At 8 ohms my head would pump 700 watts into it.

For those of you familiar with Edens my questions are these:

- Is that 400w rating conservative, or pretty accurate?
- Am I going to be in danger of blowing speakers running the B1500 into it?
- Opinions on the cab in general? Looks really nice and I found a few reviews raving about the tone, but not a lot of info otherwise.

It's 74 pounds, which I'm not thrilled about, but I don't really expect to move it that much since it's a backup.

Thanks guys!

I once melted off those braided speaker leads in a speaker by using too small of an amp. It apparently didn't dig the distortion it was getting.

Now I play my BX1500 into a Peavey 2X10 -- 4 ohms/450w. It's nice headroom to have... but I'd be inclined to think cautiously in your case (but then, I'm an old guy.) No reason your volume has to be twisted to 10. If you need louder, you need more speakers.

I played through the Eden 212 at a music store and I LOVED it.
I believe I was running my ashdown 500 through the 4 ohm Eden 212, meaning 575 watts from the head, and the cab really seemed to be a great fit for that power input. No sign of woofing out at all, sound and volume was prime.

No danger. As with any combination, just listen to it, it'll tell you when it's time to back off. Your amp isn't putting out all that power unless it's cranked up, just keep the volume and/or bass boost in check and it'll be fine.

At this point, I'd say go for another of the model you know and love. . . It's known and proven. . . And, since it is going to be a backup, maybe you can wait a little longer to save for it . . .

It's a great cab that is either 4- or 8-ohms. It is not switchable.

The 400w rating is what it is. It is a fairly efficient cabinet, so it makes the most out of the watts you feed it, tonally and volume wise. Isn't your current cab rated at 600 watts? In this case, efficiency and cabinet design are probably more important than power rating.

Trust your ears, avoid woofing/farting, and avoid the anger of blowing speakers.

I have used a D212XLT 4-ohm cabinet for years. It is a great standalone cabinet with full, balanced sound, and greater power handling than a D210XLT. It has decent projection, and is good for stage monitoring, as well as small- to mid-size rooms. It has ability to hang with any bashing drummer. If you need more than that, you probably need PA support.

Yep, it's 74 pounds, but it's a manageable 74 pounds, easily fitting in the backseat of a small car. I'd say give it a go for your backup, assuming that it's in good shape to begin with. It's a good sounding, robust, and durable cabinet. If you do buy it, let us know how you like it, and which cab actually becomes the backup.
