Eden 410xlt or Aguilar DB410

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Aguilar DB750 head running it through an Eden 410xlt and 210xlt. I have 3 Aguilar GS112s, but they're a little too mid shy for me.
I tried an Aguilar DB410 cab at Jive Sound in DC. Sounded great. But the true test is either at rehearsal or a gig. Sometimes things sound good at a store just don't cut the mix and sometimes things that sound narly, sound great with the band.
Any opinions?

I would only change the 210xlt to a 210xst. That rig should jump up and pound anyone/thing out there.

I've had vast experience with just about all of the Aguilar cabs and I still prefer the GS cabs to the DB cabs. That's not to say they sound bad by any means, just not my thing. I also have a lot of experience with Edens too, and to me they are more comparable to the Aguilar GS cabinets. If you're not satisfied with your sound, it may be time to try the DB410 to see if it fits you.

Well, I'm 90% satisfied with my sound, but I'm a tone junkie. Especially weird being a bass player. We are supporters, right? Well, I play in a jazz/rock band and I take quite a few solos during our set. I like the Edens, but if there's something out there that's in that area of sound but better, I'd like to check it out. Especially after getting my tax returns.
The never ending quest for tone. Sure, it's in your hands. But as Jaco would say, strings help too.

Your GS112 is mid shy?!? My rig, DB750/GS210/GS212, will about knock your teeth in when it comes to mids. My DB750 is set flat with High at 2 o'clock. IMO the DB cabs have less mids than the GS cabs. The DB cabs are less aggressive and more "rounder" sounding to me.

I also prefer the GS cabs over the DB's.

One GS412 or one or two GS410's would be my choice with the DB750.

The Eden 210 and 410XLT cabs do not work all that well with the DB750 IMHO. If you want to use Eden cabs with that head, I found the 212XLT / 210XST combo to be really good and also dual 410XST's off the DB750 was great also.

Are you sure you don't have your cabs mixed up? It's pretty commonly thought of that the DB cabs have a definitely more pronounced mid-range than the GS, with the GS series being slightly scooped (the Aguilar heads themselves have a very pronounced midrange which may be what you've experienced).

The GS112 sounds mid scooped. I tried a DB410 and a DB112 and it definitely had more pronounced mids.

Maybe I'm just gear hungry which is not good is this financial times. I think the Aguilar DB750 and Eden XLT cabs are a great combo. I set all the eq at 12 o'clock and I use a Ken Smith and and an Amer. Jazz with Nordy nj4se pickups. Mostly the jazz bass.

Actually the GS112 is very neutral and even, while the DBs have highly boosted mids. Eden and Ampeg cabs also have big bumps in the mids. Most amps for bass cut the mids a lot at their normal setttings, so a neutral cab will sound scooped. If you just run a power amp into a GS112, it sounds a lot like a PA monitor.

Choosing between a 410xlt and a DB410 is a little odd to me as well. The DB410 is closer to an Ampeg sound than an Eden sound. The GS410 is closer to the 410xlt it just has less of a bump in the low mids. They're both modern aggressive sounds.

Aguilar & eden 410

I've had every Eden 4-10 and 2-10 they make. eden is a marvelous company .... but started to make a switch back in the sept-oct time frame to Aguilar and bought an AG500 and gave my 1997 Eden WTS800 to my son who also has the DXLT 410 I once owned (it's good to be downstream of someone who's changing gear )

Anyway ..... ever since I've been trading and trying different Aguilar cabinets and have finally found what I am looking for.

I've had the Aguilar GS112, DB212, DB410 and GS212 and finally 2 DB112's ... 1 with a horn and 1 without.

Tje DB410 was superb but heavy (I'm 54) and I liked the extra bottom push of the 12's. My last Eden cabinet before I made the switch was the D212XLT which was my favorite cabinet from Eden. I've been using Eden gear since 1988 whne the made the SWR cloth front Goliath cabinets.

Anyway ..... more choice would definalty be the DB410 over the XLT 410. the XLT's sound more like the Aguilar GS models in my opinion but what I had been missing was that middle area. The Edens' wers superb on the bottom and top but no matter what I did it lacked the mid cutting punch.

That is not the case at all with the DB models. It does take some getting used to but the payoff is being able to hear every note you play cut through in the middle of a mix. I play in everything from an 11 piece horn band to duo's and this Aguilar has not only cut through ... it's brought me complimnets on tone, clarity and overall punch that the rest of the guys appreciate.

Anyway ... that my 2 cents.

Goog Luck!
Jim
