Eden 4x10 XLT - Voice Coil Rub? Temporary Fix?

Sign in to disble this ad
My internet sleuthing shows my Eden 4x10 XLT, which worked perfectly when purchased last night, now suffers from voice coil rub - when played at any volume I hear a rattle from the lower right speaker, and when I push gently on the cone I hear/feel a soft scrape.

Two questions - this needs to be fixed by either a re-cone or new speaker, yes? I'm about a four-hour drive from the nearest Eden repair center, so should I try to find a non-Eden local option or call customer service about purchasing a new speaker? Cheaper is better in my current financial situation.

Next - in tinkering with the speaker I noticed that a bit of pressure on the spider (I believe that's the part of the speaker I'm talking about...) stifles the rattle. I have a gig tomorrow that I was really hoping I could use this cab for. I'm toying with the idea of placing electrical tape on it to see if that will dampen the rattle similarly to placing my finger on it. If the speaker is already f-ed, needing to be replaced, and pressure on the spider stops the interfering rattle, should I just go ahead and see what happens with the gig? Or is this just a terrible idea?

Hi.

Since the voice coil rub can be the result of many different kinds of damage to either the motor assembly or to the basket, any kind of band aid remedy is hard to suggest without seeing/hearing/feeling the speaker.

A recone will be a remedy only if the voice coil is the only part that's damaged.

If there's dirt or magnet fragments in the gap, a new speaker is the only option.

The same goes with a distorted or bent basket.

I have, and would probably use that cab with a SS amp since a possible damage to that faulty speaker will still leave the other parallell pair functioning, but it'll obviously double the impedance. I'd also put the rattling one (with it's series pair if possible) on bottom.

Regards
Sam

Thanks for the informative reply. The "band-aid remedy", a term which I rather like, muffled the rattle a little but didn't remove it completely. The speaker is in the bottom row. I'm using an Eden WTX-500 to power it, and I gather from your response that I shouldn't be terrified of further damaging the cabinet through use for a gig today. Hopefully, the noise of a full band will cover the rattle somewhat.

Afterwards, I'll pull the speaker and bring it to a shop in town to see if they can tell me whether it's a recone or a new speaker. Thanks again for the useful information.

EDIT - In case anybody out there wonders, I went ahead and did the show - you couldn't tell that there was a problem, which holds true after listening back to the recording. The group after us was told there would be backline gear, which there wasn't, so the rhythm section lent gear out. I got to walk out and listen to the rig played with a Fender Jazz and it sounded KILLER. So, I guess I need to figure out what's going on but in the short term I've got myself a wicked, albeit wicked heavy, rig.
