EDEN/AMPEG Rigs - Need Advice

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some info/opinions on my first bass rig.

My budget is around 1000-1500 (new) for an amp and a cab (1000-1500 for each) but I am also considering vintage gear.

I play in a funk/jazz/hip-hop group with a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass (getting upright after the rig) and would need my rig to reflect that.

I was originally looking at an Eden WT-550 amp & one of the 4x10 cabs (not sure which of the two). But I recently came across some interesting used gear that I am now considering.

Amp

1972 Ampeg V4B (http://www.usedottawa.com/classified-ad/11682281)

Cab

AMPEG 410HE
(http://ottawa.en.craigslist.ca/msg/1669433718.html)

or

EDEN D410T

or

SWR Goliath I/II

So I am looking for any info, opinions or reviews on any of these or any suggestions you might have.

Thanks!

I am not into vintage gear. New I would look at the SVT-450H with a Ampeg 610HLF. the amp is about $800 and the cab is $999. Bigger? the fridge 810E with an SvT4-PRO. Don't know anything about Eden.

v4b is a classic amp. used to own one and loved it. couldn't see the price because the page wouldn't load for me but in the us they go for between $500-600 in good shape. that and a 410he would get you a great sounding medium volume rig. or any of those cabs, really. i've used them all and i like them, but i like the 410he the best because it's sealed.

the eden rig is probably considered better for funk and hip-hop by most bassists in that genre, and it will go louder and stay clean, but i would much rather rock the ampeg rig for that kind of stuff because it's got character.

i paid 400 bucks for my v4b and they turn up fairly regularly for 500-600......

i saw in the classifieds an svt for 1250 with a road case, and there's a guy in calgary with a mesa 400+ for 1100.....if you run into a deal on an amp its great,.but it can be a waiting game when you are looking for something vintage or specific.....better in my book to look for the deals that are out there.....an svt will get you through any gig, hold it's value, and then you can sit back and wait for deals on vintage gear for the collection

re cabs

I can't speak to the amp , but as far as the cabs go the ampeg 4 x 10 is a great sounding cab, but i believe it is sealed and requires a bit more power.. and doesn;t like to get real loud ( a relevant term ) I used to play 2 he stacked and got a pretty good Ampeg fridge tone. as far as the SWR 2, it is a great sounding box but the mids are scooped and it's rear ported.. I used one for 5 years and it always sounded good.

i can't speak for the Eden.

As far as an amp goes, I like the GK1001, I use a GK2001..wish I had bought the 1001. I found in IMe the GK stuff for me sounds better than the Eden.. The eden power limits come on too soon especially when using a 5 string ...(I know I'm gonna catch heat for that) but I had a wt800 and with the bass turned up slightly and a low B it happened quite a bit.

another option is to find a good new or used power amp and a preamp you like... then get a rack with wheels!!!!

good luck!

I have arrived by a long process of elimination at Eden 8x10 LXT best clean cab, OLD Ampeg metal badge 2 x 1 X 15 with Altec 418 series 11 guaranteed for life speaker option = best filthy for a 100 to two hundred watt tube head.
The V4B is a really great amp, ever so slightly on the filthy side of clean. but not quite as filthy as the svt when partially aroused.
Nudge! Nudge If you know what I mean?!
