Eden WT550 noise/hiss

Sign in to disble this ad
got a problem with an Eden WT550.

bought it off eBay recently, and it works fine except for a ton of noise in the input stage. even with nothing plugged in to the amp, the hiss is very noticeable and changes in relation to the input gain knob. it's also affected by the enhance & EQ controls, and is passed through the speaker outs as well as the DI out.

this is definitely hiss, not 60-cycle hum or anything. I've tried different speaker cables, power sources, etc. I tried replacing the tube and nothing changed.

of course this isn't really an issue when playing, but this amp will be getting a lot of use in the studio, and the internal noise is way more than I'd like to deal with.

anyone have any ideas? is it worth dealing with Eden's service department or should I just go it on my own, locally?

thanks.

Do a search on Eden customer service with the forum google search and you should be able to come up with your own conclusion. This thread may interest you. This too.

I've always had considerable "hiss" from my tweeters. I think its because of the tube preamp stage. maybe you can try different tubes or try different combinations of what tone controls are turned up like keep the head treble more near zero and play with treble in the guitar or effects? I don't know how much is caused by the eq section because I don't hear it much at stage performance level, not much at all.

(note: writing while drinking... )

Before anything else try cleaning the input and effects loop jacks very carefully with De-Oxit.

I'll give that a go.

I keep noticing that lots of Eden users in threads here are constantly talking about cleaning the 1/4" jacks, and the Eden literature constantly mentions the practice, stressing it heavily. what's the deal? all contact points, of any variety (XLR, 1/4", barrier strip, etc.) on any amp, instrument, or effect are liable to collect oxidation & dust & whatnot. I mean, I dig the attention to detail - I'm a stickler for obsessively cleaning my tape machine at every possible moment - but why does that issue come up so much in regards to Eden gear?

Don't know why but these amps do have a tendency to get very noisy from having oxidized jacks, especially the effects return, more so than others.

huh. OK. I'll give it a good cleaning & we'll see what happens.

from the looks of the case this thing has logged a lot of hours. probably do for a good cleaning & once-over.
