| Effective Use of the Gain and Master Q/A

Someone referred to the impact of using the Gain vs. the Master as a resulting "crunch" -- which leads me to think of a kind or type of compression.
(1) Could the interplay between the gain and master, or preamp and power amp (which guitarists traditionally thrive on for distortion) be thought of as a compression with a soft or hard slope, depending on ratio, or is it more of a clean vs. dirty effect.
(2) At risk of generalizing, for many solid state players, most of the signal will be relatively clean and shaped. Is there a way to use the gain to transform the signal into something more interesting than just the "clean solid state amp" sound?
Admittedly, I rely more on tone controls to get the desired sound and pressure level, fearing that the use of the gain could rob the signal of some of the frequency fullness.
I suspect that somebody knows how you might use gain/master and tone combined to get a solid state amp to produce a better sound.
