Electro-Voice B215-M Crossover Help

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently acquired a mint condition EV B215-M 2X15 Cabinet. The cabinet has all its original driver and all are working. There seems to be an issue with the cross over. If I disconnect the 6.5" mid-range and reconnect it to a source it works perfectly. connected through the cross over it does not. Both 15" drivers are working properly.

Looking at the cross over there is a coil, two 40ohm resistors and two 30uf non-polarized capacitors. I am guessing here but, I assume that the two 40ohm resistors are creating the -6 and -12dB positions on the attenuation circuit. The capacitors appear to be in good condition (not leaking or bulging).

Any thoughts?

Sounds like the 15s are running full-range and the mid can just be rolled in for an assist.

It might be worthwhile to redesign the crossover to an actual 2-way; check out the crossover calculator at erseaudio.com for some ideas...

Chances are one or both caps are blown. There would not necessarily be any external signs of damage.

Non-polarized, same capacitance, same or better tolerance, same or higher working voltage.

They would give you improved performance over the old bipolar lytics.

These are just as good.

The Solens aren't silly priced, you could spend $100 or more if you wished. But as with wire price is no indication of quality, and spending more money seldom results in better sound.

My Mid is still unhappy. I connected the mid directly to an amp and it has low output.

Do I Recone? do I replace. It looks as if a 10" driver will drop right into the opening.

I have two of the single fifteen versions I have been thinking about reworking for a while. Same Xover problems. Changed the caps and the mid still gets too much low end. sounds great bi amped.

I think I may have narrowed the problem to a bad mid or a bad coil. I'm going to check tonight. When I tested the mid in the past it was always through the cross over. When I disconnect it tonight I will no for sure.
