Eminence issues

Got an Eminence Delta Pro 12A for a project. The thing is brand new, but when I hit almost any note on my bass, I get a buzz or rattle sound. This shouldn't be happening, right? Should I send it back to partsexpress?

This is just testing it outside a cabinet, but even when I hold the frame it happens.

its probably buzzing and rattling because its not in a cabinet. speakers need the resistance of a speaker cabinet to work properly

You cannot use a speaker outside of a box. the two things are essential to each other. What you're doing can damage the speaker, if it hasn't already. You also cannot put the speaker into just any old box. It must be designed to work together.

That's an excellent method for blowing a driver.

Really? Even at low levels? Then how can you even have an open back cab?

Anyways, I'll stop for now until it gets in a cab.

An open back cab is fine for guitar, but not for bass. Bass instruments move the cone much more, and those speakers expect the air loading provided by a cab.

It's also possible that the speaker got dropped in shipping, and thus the voice coil is rubbing against the magnet assembly. If you press lightly on the cone to move it, you should not hear any rubbing sound.

I'll try pushing against the back lightly. Should it totally deaden the rattle/buzz?

Push the front of the cone but not on the center dust cap itself. It should move quietly in and out. You can move it up to about 1/4" without danger. Just don't crease it or put a hole in it!

If the voice coil is rubbing, you can't fix it without reconing or replacement. Since it's new, a replacement would make the most sense.

Define, "rubbing sound." What exactly am I listening for? A scratching noise or a grinding noise?

ANY sound.........

You should be able to move the cone in and out without any sounds or resistance.

No sounds when I gently push on the cone. I'll let you guys know how this turns out once I have a cab available.

As Rickenboogie advised the cabinet has to match up with the driver you own. Just buying and empty box will not cut it.
