| A port does not "direct" air flow. Porting tunes the cabs internal volume (size) to a speakers requirements. In the old days of full and 3/4 bass reflex there was just a cutout in the soundboard. Extending the cutout behind the soundboard is porting and allows smaller cabinet size (with trade offs). It is all about loading a specific speaker to the air outside the cabinet at what frequency.
