Talking Empty Rack Space... How do I fill it? Or should I say, with what do I fill it?

Sign in to disble this ad
So background:

I have an Ampeg V-4B head I use with either my svt115 or my svt810.
I just purchased an svt-4pro and a 4space SKB rack with hopes to increase my clean power and punch. I have a nice pedal board with all sorts of goodies, so I'm not really looking for a rack of digital fx. I am also not a fan of power conditioners. So, what do I fill my empty rack space with?

Any suggestions?

Some people get a 1 space digital tuner. It's kinda nice to have it toward eye level so you can tune up quick.

Well, I use a racked tuner and wireless receiver, and wouldn't be without either for gigging... Here's mine:

You can get blank cover plates .... they come in solid or slotted (for venting ) I believe they come in 1 through 4 rack space heights ...I've seen them in GC, in the pro audio section

I have a pedal tuner that I enjoy using the mute function for changing guitars, between songs, and tuning up, wouldn't the rack tuner be little over kill?

Yeah, I wouldn't use both - I have used my racked tuner to mute just like you do with a pedal tuner, although I'm currently using it in the tuner out jack, and using the amp's mute feature...

I really like that locking drawer... I know the svt-4pro has a bad reputation for overheating w/o enough space to keep cool in the rack.

Question: Would it be best to put the amp flush against the top or bottom if I was to include another item into the rack?

svt-4 pro

unless your case has a cooling fan, i would not recommend adding anything else. since the SVT-4 pro has the main exhaust blowing out the side rather than the back, it gets extremely hot in the rack. i have a 4 space SKB rack and i had to take out my rack mount tuner because during long nights i was having problems with it overheating and shutting down for a few minutes. i took the tuner out and have not had any problems since then, but it still gets scary hot...

Exactly what I heard, and fearing... however, I do like the vented space holders. Do they make a single rack sized fan unit for racks? If not someone should really look into this. lol

If that's the case, I'd go with jastacey's advice and get a slotted blank panel.

Most of the u1 Fan units are like this. The fan orientation is more geared towards a computer rack I think. I'm not sure how much help something like this would be for your situation. Maybe someone else has more experience with this.

EDIT:

Oh, and those things might be pretty noisy too. If you go for one, see if they list a db rating.

This could do the trick... vented, and light!

+1. Incredibly useful. Stash your cables, picks (if you use them), earplugs, tuner, spare strings, hex keys, cleaning cloth, spare smokes, flashlight, spare batteries, gaffer tape, miscellaneous tools, pedals, etc etc etc in there, and then, all of a sudden, you don't need to bring an extra bag to the gig.

cooling

i have been playing with the idea of cutting a hole in the side of the case where the exhaust fan is, then mounting some kind of steel mesh over the hole so it can breathe better. i bet that would take care of the cooling problem and allow use of that other rack space.

So I found this fan unit, but I wasn't sure if you can attach units to the rear of racks. Is it possible/a good idea to attach a fan unit like this in the rear of a rack?

What he said. Just because you have a space...does that mean that you have to fill it with a piece of gear? Simpler and lighter can be better.
