So I play a variety of music and planned on getting by with a 4x10 rig like most of us. I've currently joined a new group that is some pretty heavy rock with two guitarists with a 4x12 for each of them, one may even end up running a 2x12 combo with a 4x12 extension. Needless to say the 4x10 is getting pushed fairly hard but more so for the shows would be the presence of a big cab. A lot of the songs will be on my 5-string or drop-d so the lower freq range is important. I figure that will be fairly enough background for you guys to give some suggestions, feel free to ask anything else I may have left out.
TL R What giant cab set-up should I do to rock on stage?

Sealed 8x10 like an Ampeg but had Neo drivers so it weighed only 85 lbs. Didn't go into super low tunings, but held its own with a low B and sounded sweet in drop D on a 4 string. I just got tired of hauling it into small clubs cause it was overkill!

Those things push a ton of air and I think they sound great. I play an El Whappo and Tri210 driven by an Aguilar db750 and I am in heaven. Just a reference point, I am currently playing in a rock trio so I really need to fill a lot of empty space. I also do some lower key jazz and acoustic gigs where I just use the tri210.
If those don't tickle your fancy (there are some Accugroove haters out there), go for Ampeg 810. If I ever am forced to change cabs, I would switch to the 810 (or add another 410).
Hope that helps!

| | | | ^Thanks, more than likely I will be looking in the used market so it's luck of the draw on what comes up. I am in AZ and haven't seen a lot of Accugroove stuff(maybe everybody likes it enough not to sell it) but I see a lot of Peavey, GenzBenz, GK, Ampeg, SWR, etc. What does the El Whappo consist of?

I think that setup would be quite adequate!

Plus, each speaker is individually enclosed and vented so it's a pretty clear sound. The reason for MOST of the accugroove hate is because of the "accuswitch" which is suppose to change the cab from 4 ohms to 8 ohms. I guess they did a lot of tests where it wasn't actually changing the ohms accurately, so the company caught a lot of heat for that. Luckily, I got one of the early El Whappos that doesn't have the Accuswitch. However, My Tri 210 does have the accuswitch, but I've never had any problems with it. The Aguilar db750 can go down to a 2 ohm load anyway...so no worries for me!

Buy a great cab first... You're backline will sound even better but you'll feel an underlying current in your being to upgrade your head next... and that's when things get fun. What's a little debt, right?
