Epifani: How do you fix a broken (blown) horn?

I have an T series (NYC) Epifani cab that has a blown horn. Is it repairable?

I've check the crossover and attenuator and they both woork fine. I tested the horn and there is no continuity.

Nick doesn't have spare parts form the NYC Series cabs. He suggests changing the crossover and the horn. I can do it but would like to stay with the original sound if possible. No big reason.

Does any one know if they repairable and if so how ?

+1 One of the few negatives I have with the Epifani line is the lack of tweeter protection circuitry. I blew the diaphragm in on 210UL quite a while ago, and as above, Nick sent a replacement that took two minutes to install for about the price noted above. He should be able to do the same for you in this case.

It is the audiotek. I talked to Nick and he wants me to replace the horn and crossover. He says it will sound better and smoother than the old crossover. Well I didn't takl to Nick I spoke to Sean (SP?) who asked him while I was on hold. Price $135 shipped for horn and crossover.

I actually like the newer crossover that Nick used on the newer NYC's (non T's) and the UL's. It's probably worth the cost if you like the cab. The newer tweeter and crossover is warmer and smoother... very nice!

I'm want to do it. But before I spent the money I wanted to see if anyone knew how to fix the horn. Thanks K.

Thumbs up

Hmmm. Do any of you know if Nick used the same tweeter+crossover on all his T series cabs? I just got an older T212 (side by side) and I like it, but am wondering if it can be upgraded and (obviously) what that would cost me. Thanks.

He used 2 diff horns as noted by Ken. He used P audio and Audiotek. The current upgrade is (don't quote the prices exactly but approx, the prices are in my car) I was quoted around $135 for crossover and Horn. I think the speaker upgrade for a UL112 single is around $187??? I could be wrong. I'll check the prices and repost.
He uses a different set-up for his UL line.

With the T series, I'd recommend replacing the horn and crossover together. Nick has made changes through the T and NYC series as most do to improve their sound.

I had a T212 and upgraded with a newer horn and crossover a few years ago and it really balanced out the highs nicely. IMO, you will not be disappointed. Sold the T212 about 7 months ago with the old horn/crossover. Sorry.

I am needing to replace my Audiotek tweeter and crossover but I can not get Shawn at Epifani to help me out. He plain just won't help me! He actually told me it is time to upgrade my cab!

Anyway, can anyone tell me what kind of tweeter and horn Epifani sends out as a replacement?

Maybe I can order it from somwhere else.

Thanks,

Ryan

Chances are it's either a cheaply replaced and identifiable model, or a model that you can buy replacement diaphragms for, usually from a variety of sources/outlets. So identify what's in there - that's the first step.

I don't blame cab manufacturers for not wanting to troubleshoot long-distance or tutor people on how to replace stuff because it can come back to shoot them in the hooves later anyway, not including the time spent. Sometimes it's easier to handle it another way I guess.

I think it broke when the power amp was shut off & the amp kept clipping. It wasn't an overload of power while playing. Would the diaphragm be the first thing to go in that case? I'd try that if it looks likely thats whats cauing the crackling at high volumes,
Thanks
Mike

If it is a rattling noise, then is possible that a wire is touching the cone. This is an easy fix. Call Epifani, they have good customer service and will help you diagnose the problem.

I have the tweeter out of the cab now & the wires look well connected.
Still rattles at loud volumes in or out of the cab. I'll open up the horn & check the diaphragm although I'm not sure what I'm looking for!

What I was referring to is that a wire MIGHT be touching the cone. take out the speaker and see if one of the wires is in contact. If it is, then bend the wire backwards away from the speaker. If it were during the week, the guys at the shop would totally be taking care of you.

Thanks for the advice bro. What shop are you referring to?

Damn at this point i need to shut the whole tweeter off to play although the longer i play the less crackling occurs. Weird that its worse the first 2 minutes I play
