EQ Rack unit

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm running a Peavey Tour 700 through a Trace Elliot 2x15 cab and an ashdown 2x10+tweeter cab.
My question is: I have a spare 2 channel 31band eq unit with xlr inputs/outputs. Can I hook the EQ up between the amps and the cabs to give me more power over the sound?

Thanks in advance!

Not between amp and cabs, oh no. But, between preamp and poweramp. You'd use the pre out and power in patches that would be on back of your amp, if it has them.

No! Not at speaker level. At best you'd blow up the eq. If your amp has an effects loop, that's where you'd want it.

Thanks for the quick reply! That's a shame, I only have 1 effects loop and the point was to have 31band eq for each cab seperately. But I suppose even if I use it to EQ the overall sound it will give me much more freedom than a 9 band EQ!

Unfortunately, the only way to eq your cabs separately is to use two amplifiers.

31 band graphic eq can be more of a headache than it's worth, and normally the parametric/graphic on your amp should be sufficient.

Does that Trace Elliot cabinet have a tweeter or a horn? If so, from my experience, the TE 15's are fairly bright and a 2x15 can be used as a full-range standalone...and you can leave the Ashdown in your rehearsal space. Then you can tailor your amp to be ideal for one cabinet.

...also, is the Trace a 4 ohm cabinet...and is the Ashdown an 8 ohm...and is the Peavey Tour head a 4 ohm minimum load head? If so, pairing the two cabinets might drop the load below 4 ohms, which could be bad for the Peavey. Just a thought.

The 2x15 has no horn, just the 2x10!
The load is fine, both cabs are 8 ohm and are in parallel with the amp which delivers 700 watts at 4 ohms.
