eurotubes mesa boogie 400+ retube options

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking at doing a full re-tube of my Mesa Bass 400+ ( because it really need its) and I'm having a hard time picking either the standard option or the high gain option at eurotube.com how would I benefit from spending the extra money on the high gain option ???? I play mostly metal and rock so metallica, black sabbath type stuff, mostly play with my finger but some times i play with a pick if it calls for it.

thx guys

You didn't mention anything about playing style, etc. but going by your profile info...yes go high gain. My 400+ has a lot less grind on the second channel compared to the earlier 400 and D-180 models so for rock and metal stuff it would be better to have that earlier breakup on the dial as an option.

I got tubes for my Mesa 400+ from Bob at Eurotubes, but went with 'regular' matched tubes. I would think that if you want more breakup go for the high gain, less breakup go with the standard. Even cleaner, look into some other options, like 5751's, 12AT7, or 12AU7's in the preamp stage.

I'm assuming the sets you are talking about are really the preamp tubes. I'd go with the low gain unless you love the breakup on this head's preamp. High gain tube sets are generally geared more for guitarists. You could always swap a high gain tube into the V1 spot (probably greatest impact on tone) on it at later time.

The trouble is... the 400+ is a beast. If you want power tube breakup (which I prefer the awesome sound of on these heads), you would need to be pushing some serious volume.

What does Bob say? He has never steered me wrong and I've bought a lot of tubes from him.
