Which ext cab for GK1001/210 combo?

Sign in to disble this ad
Have been gassing to get the GK neo 212 as an extension cab for my old GK1001/210 combo, but just read a good review for the GK neo 115. Any opinions on how either of these cabs sound with this particular combo amp?

I play everything and I do like playing loud sometimes.

I mostly play a MM Sterling 4, maple neck, Jackson Concert Pro V, Gibson Ripper fretless 4, JPJ P Bass and a Ricky 4001.

any other brand suggestions ext cabs for this GK combo, but seems like I should pair GK with GK.

ps> LOVE this GK1001/210 combo! A little weighty, but tons of power!

another 2x10 would likely be best. mixing bass speakers is not as cool as people seem to think it is.

I agree with the above comment. As boring as it sounds, getting another 2x10 will most likely sound the best.

Hmmm. The two problems I see with a GK neo 210 is it's an 8Ω cab rated at 400w.
My combo has a 540w ext speak out @ 4Ω, the Neo212 is rated 600w @ 4Ω. Sounds like a better match.
The Neo115 is 8Ω at 300w.

Hold on the G-K 1001RB will support a 4 ohm min. load only. What that means is you can only add one 8 ohm cab with the internal speakers still operational. NO 4 OHM CABS unless you disable the internal speakers.

YES I'M SURE!

Thanks B-string! That's good to know!!
The Neo 212 is 4Ω or 8Ω - the other two cabs mentioned are only available to run as 8Ω.

From the manual:
"Rear Panel Controls: 540W Amp Only
540W power amp output for Full-Range operation only.
They deliver 540 watts into 4 Ohms. Lower impedances
should not be used. Each jack has a minimum of 8 Ohms
each. Higher impedances such as 8 Ohms, 16 Ohms, or
No Load are acceptable. No damage will result from
operating the amplifier with the speakers disconnected.
"

so I guess the last line is what you're referring to. A little confusing. I figure if a company is going to give me an extension out on a combo that says "540w@4Ω" directly on the panel, they're gonna mean use a 4Ω extension cab with the combo "as is". What is the use of disconnected speakers that are already built in was my [il]logic. Thanks again for pointing this out!

FWIW I have run this combo through a 4Ω Sunn 12+18 cab without disconnecting the internal speakers. I haven't had any issues but will discontinue this practice if it will damage the combo. But doesn't get hot or crap out.

Pretty sure the internal speakers = 8 ohms so you are good to go with an 8 ohm extention cab. I really don't know who made "minimum load impedance" a standard on the back of amps but it does cause a lot of confusion?
I would stop using the 4 ohm cab

Found this review:

"The Gallien-Krueger NEO212-II is a 600 watt enclosure with two 12 inch speakers plus a horn. A four conductor Speakon cable is included for use with GK's Bi-Amp heads. The NEO212-II is the newer version of the NEO212 that is larger and stacks with the NEO410 and NEO210. The NEO212-II is only available in 8 ohms as of November 2010. The 4 ohm version has been discontinued and GK is no longer making any. Check out the 212MBE for a 4 ohm speaker if you want one that is similar."

The GK product website is always slow to post new info.

Seems like to go the route of adding more 10s, then the neo 410, also an 8Ω unit @ 800w, would be the way to go.
Still leanin' 212!

The G-K 1001 might work a 115 pretty darn hard, I would be worried about a 115 holding up?
