Extra cooling?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Ashdown MAG 300 head which I got second hand.

It has an 80mm computer-style fan in the back, which is getting a little tired. (it's 5+ years old)

If I found a higher-spec PC fan (more airflow) and fitted it, would I get more clean power from the amp etc if it ran cooler?

No, but you'll get better cooling.

I would think that it would reduce the chance of an equipment failure more than it would affect the sound. It sounds like a good idea to me if you are able to do it.

Check the stock fan, it might be 12 VDC, like a PC fan, or it might be 110 VAC.

Fans wear out.
Bearings give out some times. They get clogged with dust.

Sometimes you need to change them.

Chances are high it's a plug-in replacement, Just like on PC's, and easy to change out.

No, but You'll blow (suck?) more dirt in there if there's no filtering.

DO NOT install any filters though if You're not prepared to clean 'em periodically, a clogged filter and the resulted drop in the air-flow is a sure way to overheat the amp.

What I'd do is to install a thermostat or a two to control the fan and the thermal protection.

Sam

Nothing will be different, the amp will run cooler and should thank you by living longer. Heat is the #1 killer of electronics.

My experience has been that you will see a little more headroom out of a SS amp if it's kept cool. It will most definitely increase it's reliability in the long term.
