Question The Fabled 410 and a 115 Cab Combo

Sign in to disble this ad
What's up guys....

Piggybacking off this thread:
2 4x10s vs 8x10? which talks about the two 410 and an 810, I'd thought I'd open up a discussion of why one would add a single 115 to a 410 or 610 combination or whatever. I've been told that adding a 115 adds more low end, and that it doesn't add low end but more mids, or that it doesn't really add much of anything if you got 410s.

The values of having a lone 115 or two 115s is subtopic of this. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of whether or not to add a 115 to my 410 rig. I'm looking to add more low-end to my 410. I know it depends on the individual, but besides just borrowing a friend's 115 and playing it at rehearsals and gigs, I thought I'd hear from you guys on your experience with it in all types of environments.

I also gather setting up two 410s would also be phat.

Thanks.

The 115 will theoreticly have a lower general voicing than the 4x10. But sometimes the two of them wont work well together, even if from the same manufacturer. That is unless you run a crossover and only lows to the 15.

Has to do with (I think its called) phase cancelation. Lots of threads about this already. I know Im about to get flamed beyond belief for not going into greater detail about it but im not much of a typer.

People generalise that 115s will produce more lows than a 410 or 210 or what have you. You can't possibly say this based on the speaker diameter alone.

Very generally, your average 410 will probably have better lows than your average 115, but, again, not because of the speaker diameter or anything like that.

Essentially, if you want to add another cab you have the following options:
1) Add another cab identical to the one you've got already. Tone will be the same, but a bit more volume (+ the extra low end you want) etc.

2) Add a different cab. This is may have good or bad results depending on your tastes.

edit: Yeah, there are issues with mixing regarding the phase response of different speakers. Some speakers of different deisgn such as (I think) the kappalite 3015 and the kappalite 3012ho have sufficiently close phase responses so as to not encounter these problems. It's a matter of some consternation in these parts, regarding the importance (or, indeed, otherwise) these phase issues.

Also, if you have technical questions I'd advise asking someone like Bill Fitzmaurice or greenboy. They are very learned in these practices.

For what its worth I use an Ampeg 410 and 115 with an ampeg svt head and it sounds great. I have not had any phase problems either.
