Fact or fiction? Transporting a cab lying down is bad for the speaker cones??

Sign in to disble this ad
I thought I read something here about NOT laying a cab on its back for transporting it. Something about the magnets hanging in a way they weren't meant to, and possible damage to the paper speaker cones from the weight of the magnets pulling on the cones.

I'm going to be getting a 410 cab in the near future and, in all likelihood, it'll have to go in the trunk of my Hyundai Sonata which means it'll have to lay down for the ride home.

Will this new-to-me cab be safe for a 45 minute ride? or should I try to arrange to take my wife's Trailblazer to work that day?

i'm sure someone will give you a deffinative answer using science and numbers combined with a manufactures warranty all i can quote from however is personal experience
i've had 1 solid speaker cab i've used since i started playing its a beat up old hartke 410 and it was 2nd hand when i bought it. now then it does have aluminium cones not paper ones but i've transported it face down, face up, end on end and wedged in the corner of a ford Ka at such an angle to deny all physics

9 years of this and it was still going strong.... till i left it in a damp shed and the drivers went mouldy

i might just be lucky though in short dont take what i just said as gospel

Stand it up or lay it face down.

Well, if you like driving your wife's Trailblazer more than your Hyundai, then put the cab in your wife's Trailblazer and let her know you have to use it every time you have to haul your cab around.

But seriously, I have never heard of damage hauling a cab on it's back. I have never had an issue with it, but who is to say I am correct. However, if this is true, then why do you see several car stereo installations with speakers installed in several positions?

For as much abuse as a cab takes, I am sure a 45 minute ride on it's back will not hurt.

I don't know if it was the cause, but I had a cab that worked fine at my house before a gig, and had a blown driver during sound check. It was damaged during trasport, but I don't know if it was because it was on its back or not.

I have heard it since I was a teenager 30 years ago, so he isn't the only one. Lay it on your back if you feel like gambling, don't cry when you lose though.

Drivers are shipped from the factory packed in a cardboard box with the magnet facing down.

I had a Berg NV 610 that started making some funny rattling noises so I took it to a repair shop to see what was up. They said that the magnets were coming loose from the speakers (I think one or two had actually fallen off). The shop called Jim Bergantino and he/Eminence replaced all of my drivers under warranty (talk about awesome customer service!!!).

Jim and the repair guys were really surprised to see this happen to a cab (hence Jim replacing the speakers), but in retrospect I think this happened because I was laying the cab flat on its back in my band's beater van. The moral of the story is don't lay a cab on it's back every time you go to a gig in your van with terrible suspension, but if you do it every now and then in a smooth-riding car then I'm sure you'll be fine.

if this were the case, playing the thing without it being on it's face would cause the mags to fall off...

Like I said, by all means you guys should transport your cabs on their backs.

Because playing it is exactly the same thing as driving around with it in the bed of your pickup truck.

Seems like I'd be better off laying it in face down then.

FICTION: It's much better to have the cabinet lying with speakers facing down than to have it standing up and fall over during transport.

Sure, if you plan on just standing it up in the bed of the truck and letting it roll around.

Tip one: Properly SECURE your load.

Tip two: Standing it up and securing it properly will help keep you from scratching the **** out of the face of your cab.

Tip three: If tip two is not feasible, gently lay it on it's face and make sure your load is secure. If possible, lay a moving blanket down first to avoid scratching the **** out of the face of your cab.

Again, I am just some jerk on the internet, so...

Brother, if you play in such a way that your cab is subjected to the same rigors as it is during transport, stay away from my gear.
