Fellow Promethean users!

I have the Ibanez P5110 combo.

Bought it 2 months ago on an impulse buy. It was small, light, loud and had nice tone. I am looking to buy an bigger cab to use with it and just want to understand its power rating better.

The specs for the amp list 250W @ 8 ohms and 500 w @4 ohms.

My question is this "peak", "program" or "RMS" watts.

Since they don't say RMS, am I correct in assuming it is 500 W@ 4 Ohm program = 250w W RMS?

Trying to compare wattage ratings against say GK MB500 or Peavey Tour 450. Is the Promethean comparable to these two?

Would a GK MBX 8 ohm cab rated at 400 watts match up well or will it be overpowered?

Thanks

I have one, but I'm not sure about peak RMS thing. It has similar volume compared to other 500 watt class D heads, but it doesn't like a hot input and will clip hard unless instrument volume or gain is reduced. I'm not familar with the GK cab, but I would think it would be fine since the cab is only going to get 250 @ 8 ohms. Just use your ears and judgement when pushing it. If it's not loud enough, add a 2nd 8 ohm like cab.

I have the same combo. I'm not looking at the manual, but Googling for the specs should answer your power question. However, I'm pretty darn sure it's 250/500W RMS.

Which should be fine into an 8 ohm cab that's rated for 400W.

I have used mine with an Aguilar GS210 8 ohm extension cab added to it (for 3 10s worth of output) and it worked fine. And I have taken the head off the Promethean cab and used it to run the 210 plus an Aguilar GS115 8 ohm, together, and it KILLED (with a SA BDDI in front of it to give a nice Ampeg tube-ish sound)! I ran it that way for a gig at a small-ish bar. At first I had the volume in the 10:00 range and after the first song people were telling me I was drowning out the whole rest of the band (guitar, drums, keys, and vocals - all of which were running through FOH PA).

Stu - thanks for the first hand review.
Exactly what I was looking for.
I read the FAQ and I know the difference between Peak and RMS watts, its just the specifications on the manual and website for the PRomethean do not specify which one it is and my experience had been to assume it is program/peak not RMS as they would advertise RMS since it is a higher spec.
I was just looking to see if any one could confirm.

It is great to know that it has the guts to power a decent cab to loud volumes.

So far, even with just 1 x 10 speaker I love this little little amp. Dead quiet, decent tone and I never turn it up past 9:00 oclock range during practice.

Thanks for the reponse.
