Fender Bassman 300 Watt Pro All Tube Bass Amp II

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, guys,

although I love ampeg, I have just about decided to get my son a Fender 300 pro amp as the best compromise of quality and features and price (which, unfortunately, is very much an object--)

i have two qx which I would appreciate anyone chiming in on.

1) look at the pic below:

it is a cropped portion of a pic of the backside of the Fender 300 pro.

notice the 2 speaker outputs and the impedance selector switch.

i know this is a newb qx, but i just want to be sure. if i hook up two 4 ohm cabs, one to the main speaker output and one to the external speaker output, will i have to move my impedance selector switch to 2 ohms?- I guess i am just ignorant of impedance as it relates to multiple cabs plugged into 2 outputs on the amp.

2) any final thoughts or anything i should know? i already did a thread about this amp and got some really good response, which helped me make up my mind.

any last minute reservations or things i should watch out for?

thanks,

I have the identical tube head. I have it running a Fender Pro 810Cab(4 ohms) most of the time and when I added my other 4ohm Fender 215 cab I remembered to set it at 2ohms, no issues. As far as price goes ,mine was a
new ($1850) purchase and it is in the same price level as the Ampeg's. This is a major investment no matter what you buy and it looks like you are doing your homework and going in the right direction. Good Luck

thanks, buddy!

they are going for 1699.00 now, and the ampeg i was thinking of getting was the heritage at 2399.00 or so. i realize there are some foreign made ampegs that go for 17 or 18 hundred dollars, but I have NOT heard good things about them.

yeah, if you put a 4 ohm cab into each speaker output you should switch it to 2 ohms.. its a BEAST! You will absolutely LOVE the amp. It may take a little while to get familiar with to find exactly how you want it to sound but its the titz! If you pick one up used ( theres one in the TB classifieds right now ) you will save some bucks and if the guy has taken care of it you will have an amp thats in new working condition for half the price. I would recommend switching out the power tubes the Winged Cs.. the stock tubes are good of course, but the amp really comes alive with the C's. The ONLY downsides of this amp Ive found in the 4 years Ive had one is the size and weight (its bigger than an SVT and just as heavy) and the fact that with all those knobs and sliders on the front I feel REAL nervous not using a roadcase for it... which makes it bigger and heavier.

enjoy it..

I really do not see this head as any sort of compromise over an SVT.....at all. Both great if you're willing to haul 'em.

This is not a compromise on the SVT, it is an equal but different animal IMO/E

Spend a lot of time playing with the eq, it can take a long time to get used to all the various options it has and how to get your sound out of it...

This amp goes crazy loud and is a monster to move around, so I hope your son has some muscle - mind you it weighs about the same as an SVT

oh yeah.. these guys are right.. in no way are you compromising by getting a 300pro instead of an SVT.. They are different, but I PREFER the 300 and would consider it tonally, and flexibility wise a step up.. Now if youre IN LOVE with the SVT sound, then thats your thing.. but the 300 is a solid solid throwdown.
