Fender Bassman 60 old model

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I know someone wanting to sell a Fender Bassman 60 for 250$ and I'm kind of interested. It's the older model from mid 90's in silverface. I'm just wondering if it's loud enough for band practices and small bar gigs (the guy told me that it was plenty loud). Do you know anything about that amp that could help me make a decision? Is it even worth 250$?

Thanks,

Matt

Of course he told you it was plenty loud, he wants your money. 60 watts into a 15" speaker isn't going to be much volumewise. If you want a practice/rehearsal amp, go for it, but I would think you could find one cheaper - or more wattage for less cash.

I've practiced through one once. With acoustic instruments it's fine. Plugged in it's not going to work so great. Fairly bland sounding but not terrible. It could keep up with a quiet drummer and guitar player but not many of those seem to exist.

Decent amp but not worth $260 IMO. It would be a decent acoustic/practice amp for $150 maybe.

Good choice. 60 solid state watts will leave you wanting.

What is the difference between let's say 60Watts power handling and 60watts RMS ? In guitar amps, it used to say that 60 watts was 30 watts RMS? Is that true with bass amps? For example, the Fender Rumble at 150 watts would be only 75 watts?

RMS, I believe is continuous output, whereas peak power is usually the output power available for a fraction of a second. Continously running at peak power could damage the amplifier/speaker.

RMS versus peak is usually discussed in terms of power handling, not power output. You'd say your speaker cab could handle 400 watts RMS, 800 peak, and even that isn't telling you much. Amplifiers are usually rated for their RMS output so an advertisement saying the fender rumble 150 puts out 150 watts would be accurately portraying that amp's maximum power output in a musical situation. I say usually because from time to time you'll see something like this which has been noted by the experts here on TB as being rated using peak instead of RMS and claiming wattages nearly impossible to achieve and maintain using standard operating voltages.
