Fender folded horn enclosure / EV

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm back...I just can't let it go! I have now bought a Fender folded horn cabinet with a 4 Ohm EV 15 in it. The question is with a folded horn is the cabinet automatically tuned to any speaker placed in it, or would there have to be a modification to optimize my (you guessed it) Meyer MS-815 8 ohm replacement? The cabinet I bought is the small folded horn which I bel;ieve came with the old Fender 300 PS, but I'm not sure, as information on this cabinet seems to be very rare. I knoe Electro-Voice made their own very similar folded horn enclosure with a single speaker, also; either a 12" or a 15". The Meyer specs are (may be system specs, as it is from the website description for a system, but it does say each loudspeaker before giving information):

operating frequency range 60Hz - 18kHz
free field 65Hz - 18kHz +/- 4db
half field 55 Hz - 18kHz +/- 4db
phase response +/- 60 degrees from 200Hz-14kHz
Maximum Peak SPL >138 db
signal to noise >110

Fender cabinet dimensions are:

28" tall by 23 1/2" wide by 16 3/4" deep, slanted front baffle with EV 15" 4 ohm speaker, slant looks like @ 60 degrees

If you need to know anything else, just ask, and I'll try to find out. Thanks!

Why not just try it out and see how it sounds?

I will, tomorrow, but I was looking for technical advice about the folded horn, as it seems to me that the cabinet would be tuned to the frequency rather than the speaker, so it wouldn't matter which one was in there, but I'm not very well versed in cabinet tuning as many here are, and I'm trying to learn. So I'm thinking that if the horn is tuned to the correct frequency, a straight replacement would give me all of the advantages of the superior speaker without needing to worry about proper porting, cab dimensions, etc. I'm waiting to be told why I'm wrong!

Folded horns are no different from any other alignment, they must be matched to the driver specs and vis-versa. If they aren't best case they won't sound good, worst case you'll blow the driver. Matching the cab and driver with a horn is far more involved than with a sealed or vented cab, and requires a very high level of expertise. The information you've given on the Meyer driver is inadequate. These are the specs you need:

And to go along with them precise measurements of the cab and the knowledge of how to use all the data.
