Exclamation Fender Says: The Correct Way To Transport Amps

Sign in to disble this ad
Looks like the big heads at Fender have spoken:::

Quote:
Amp heads can usually be transported in their normal upright positions easily enough, so not much of an issue there.

For combo amps and speaker enclosures, though, the best way to load ’em in your car is, believe it or not, face down.

See, if you drive these things around face up, every last bump and dip and pothole in the road puts downward pressure on all the speaker parts, especially the magnets.

Transporting your combo or cabinet face down, on the other hand, minimizes these effects and can contribute to longer and healthier amp life.

Also, when loading your combo or cabinet into your vehicle face down, you should probably set it on a blanket, foam or a rug to protect the cosmetics and provide some cushioning.
So There!

So basically they're saying they used cheap stamp-framed speakers with too-heavy magnets and they don't want to be blamed when they warp?

I still say if your cab cant handle the stress of gravity and the odd bump from a pothole while being transported in the upright position, you bought the wrong cab.

I would agree with Fender's advice only for cabs that have rear-mounted speakers, so that the magnet's weight in a face-down position is pushing the speaker frame into the baffle. If the speaker is front-mounted, then the weight would tend to pull the speaker away from the baffle, which could loosen the mounting screws or worse.

Are we assuming wood screws here? If so, then point taken and understood.

But what cheap-o cab manufacturer would use wood screws? That's just 'way below cheap - all the way to criminal in my estimation.

Tee-Nuts or at least Thred-Certs and decent machine screws are the least option as far as I can think.

I go face down more for the sake of theft. If my speakers are face up, I feel as if I'm advertising to potential criminals. Face down, all they see is a large, black square box.

i transport mine in whatever orientation that they fit in the particular vehicle that's carrying them (with all of the other gear). in 40 years of gigging, i've never had an issue due to the way my amps or cabs were schlepped.

I keep thinking any bump, dip, pothole bad enough to damage my cabinet in any position, would damage me worst.

And how does Fedex, UPS, DHL, or USPS stack them when they are transporting them all over the country????

I can almost guarantee that when Fender ships cabs to distributors, the speakers are vertical- not face down OR face up. They'll be shipped the way they fit onto a palette the best.

NYC potholes could destroy any amp in any direction. But Fender's suggestion makes sense.

Yes to this and, not moving them in the open like. in the back of pickups. air pressure from driving can damage speaker, blowing the cone to one side causing the voice to stick to the magnet = blown speaker.
I think
