Getting interested in doing the head pull out of a Super Twin. How exactly do you go about yanking the amplifier part out of a Super Twin, and what hardware is needed to put it in a head box ? Any mods, electrical or otherwise need to be done? I see empty Fender Showman head boxes frequently on Ebay. Is this a good fit ?

I have one in the works right now. Just undo the four screws holding the chassis in the cabinet and pull it out. I think you'll need a Showman-sized box (I'm rolling my own right now). No mods required - just make sure the components are all stable (old caps, trannies, etc.).

Thanks. So, is the " head " screwed in from the top of the box ?

there's also four sheet metal screws that help secure it on the upper rear lip.

I'm trying to decide about this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1975-Fender-...item23240e7cb4

Looks nice, although I don't know what's up with going with 5 power tubes? Also, what do I do with the ampless cab ?

that looks like a nice one to me. it also looks like they pulled two of the output tubes to lower it's power output.

Yeah, it's running on 5 6l6's, which, according to the seller, puts out 100 watts. Is this amp a drop in for an empty Showman head box ?

A quad is 4... The power tubes are in push-pull so they're supposed to be used in pairs.

Did you buy it?

I used my Studio Bass(Super Twin) head last nite. Motown show, 11 piece band.
Used with 2 (3015 modded) PF115 cabs. Lovely sound. Ran a line from the "recording/line out" to a Radial JDI to the desk. Excellent out front of house sound.
I think mine's in a "Showman" head case, but ain't sure sorry.
Sorry for cruddy image

Thanks, just got it a few days ago. With only 4 of 6 tubes in, it sounds great through an Ampeg 15 cab that I dropped a 4 ohm speaker into. Seemingly voiced deeper than my '71 V4B and '73 SVT. Have a headcase on order through Mojotone (Purple Elephant tolex w/black grille). Regarding tubes, I've been impressed w/matching NOS for my Ampegs, thinking o going the same route with the Super Twin. Who is running what in theirs? Is a matched sextet necessary?

So far I'm loving it. Thanks JohnK for turning me on to it.

No problem, I wound up getting a mint Music Man HD 150 amp head, which I'm really digging. What did you do with the cab ? I noticed a guy has been trying to sell a " headless " Super Twin cab for months now on Ebay; nobody is bidding on it. That was my dilemma: what to do with the cab.

Haven't pulled the chassis out yet, waiting for the headcase to arrive. Then it's off to my tech for a good once over. I'll try to offload the cab cheap, or maybe trade it for something. Got it for $375 shipped so if I can get a buck fifty or so for the cab cool, if not it's ok.

Mine's got Svetlana power tubes & JAN/PHILIPS pre amp tubes in mine. I've not tried any others so far. I have a good set of Winged C 6L6's here, so barring any other mishaps, these may go in at some stage.

Taking such a pristine vintage amp and gutting it like that is a crime against humanity. You should be ashamed. Go find an old beater in good electrical shape if you want to destroy something.
