My 64 Bandmaster sounded awesome with bass guitar/cabs.
Worked out great in a lower-volume acoustic band I played in for awhile.

The Bandmaster VM is a totally different amp, with a hybrid preamp, tube output, and digital effects. I have one paired with a Weber 15" that's great for guitar, but I think there are better bass heads available for that price. It isn't voiced for bass EQ, and I don't know of any feature that makes it particularly suitable for bass. Of course, if you like the sound, that will make the difference...but it sounds as though you haven't played through one.

different amp, as lpdeluxe mentions... i havent used a "new" bandmaster yet, though i am itching to try. i do have a dead-stock '65 bandmaster. while i love, love, love this amp terribly, it sort of sucks for bass at beyond-practice-amp levels. the small OT and power supply pretty much guarantee unimpressive bass response at any "real" volume. would love to see a more direct comparison of the new and old bandmasters!
